Leonard Cohen - Greatest Hits [1975]

Leonard Cohen.
The name always brings me vague and hazy memories of dark nights sitting by the glowing coal fireside, my dad, drunk, on the armchair going on about Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and Leonard cohen.
I couldn't tell you the exact words (especially these days with my goldfish-like memory) but the general message amounted to something along the lines of: 'Bob Dylan is King of the Universe but only because he had a great admiration and respect for these other guys Woody & Leonard!' ... 'You have to listen to Leonard Cohen son!' ... at which point he would stumble across and place a cohen album on the old record player. then...aaaah. He might fall asleep. Or at least he would fall silent which was almost as good!

Leonard Cohen.
If you know him then you really don't need me to tell you what I hardly know.
If you don't know him then I ought to be telling you 'This is your lucky day!'.
I won't bore you with badly researched biographical facts that you can find for yourself at wikipedia or artist direct or here.
You can even have a listen to one of his great songs if you click this link...Suzanne
I will give you the advice my dad gave me when I was a bit older though as it's pretty good - start with the 'Greatest Hits' album and then, at your own pace you can dip into his other stuff. And, as my Dad also used to say - you won't find one fucking bad song by Leonard Cohen, the man's a genius!

I agree.

Hello freaks, Geeks & friends (?!)
It surely be that time again. As usual I am a bit behind the rest of the world but perfection takes time right.

School of Language - Sea From Shore [2007]

Hello all
A bit slow today I realise but life is a bitch and then you die. You must know that by now.
So who the hell are School of Language?
Don't ask me.
No, seriously. Someone told me I need to get listening to them if I want to even consider myself 'on the pulse' of what is going on in the music scene these days.
Well if this is the pulse I'd rather it was dead.
Fuck!!
OK, they aren't the worst or even close to the worst I've heard but that doesn't save them from being pretty damn boring in my book.
this whole 'Indie' thing is a bit overrated it seems.
Didn't it used to just mean an Independent artist or label release?
Now it brings with it the assumption of some genre that smacks of 'street/grit-rock, bohemian, different/original style, pretentiousness, old fashioned or conversely so modern no one dare understand it, not forgetting pretentiousness...oh and Pseudo Avant-Garde/Art-pop/art-crap and erm..pretentious waffle - did I mention that?'
Crap.
That's what it has become: Crap.

Let me say a few words on this actual album though instead of this general diatribe on the Indie scene...
The album opens with a very distinctive and refreshing concoction. Vocal percussion you might call it. I love it. voices arranged in a way that really draws you in...just a layered effect of the words 'ooh and aah' hehe no really!) and it works bloody well!
The song lifts off from that promising start and it really rocks.
Track two is erm...well...much the same with a lower tempo but it does have the same track title albeit 'part 2'.
The next track is poetic justice in motion with it being titled 'disappointment '99'
The disappointment, for me, is the rest of it from there...a few irritating tracks with irritating drums and loud parts that don't deserve to be, quiet parts that are just plain boring and a general dragging sensation throughout.
There is an overall suggestion of some kind of avant-garde/arty farty-ness.
I might be wrong but you decide for yourself. Maybe you like Arty Farty Indie?
Maybe I should have been kinder as this is their first album.
Fuck that.
They should try harder eh?
:)

The L Word Season Two 2 Original Soundtrack [OST] [2006]

Just a quick post here to fill the latest request...
I don't know shit about this album.
I don't know shit about the TV show and I wish to know nothing.
Some crap US TV show no doubt. some friggin brainmelt shite.
There's just too much of it on TV nowadays. In fact just about every TV show is pure mush don't you think?
I watched a 'documentary' the other day and couldn't believe how fucking poorly made it was. It was from the discovery channel and I have to say, that stations really gone to the wall since I last saw it.
It was as if the 'documentary' was made for a teen with an attention span of no more than 4 seconds. Also the creators felt the need to intersperse and punctuate every bit of information or scene with some contrived or irrelevant bullshit just to keep you interested! Clip after clip of sensasionalist nonsense which just amounted to the real meat of the story being lost in a wash of noise.
They wouldn't know a fucking documentary if it came up and bit them on the arse.

Bastards.
They just pump out any old shit, call it a documentary if it will sell more, who cares anyway.
I used to care but nowadays TV sucks bigtime.
Well, unless The X-Factor is on.
Obviously.

Oh yeah Sarah..Enjoy your requested album won't you ;)

Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour Episode 64 (S02E14) 'AROUND THE WORLD PART 1' [HIGH QUALITY MP3]

I am maybe a little late but the best things come to those that wait right?
This weeks theme is a good one - well, not the theme but the tracks he plays are pretty good. I love Warren Zevon though people always play the same song of his and there are so many much better ones...anyway, Back in the USSR is a favourite of mine too. Not forgetting the excellent song by one of my all time favoured bands: the Pogues. there is a track called 'the old Main Drag' that sums up life in London for a runaway kind of character that really is a song worth hearing if you don't know it.
I will look it out.
So go grab this weeks show!
As always, highest quality Variable Bitrate MP3 in full stereo and not a glitch in sight.
Enjoy!

There's links working already on the Dylan Page but if the mirror links you want are not clickable, it is because they are uploading right now. All recent show links will be filled over the next day.

02 Down In Mexico - The Coasters
03 Acapulco Rock - Freddy Fender
04 Werewolves Of London - Warren Zevon
05 Dark Streets Of London - The Pogues
06 Sous Le Ciel De Paris - Edith Piaf
07 Istanbul (Not Constantinople) - The Four Lads

Stephen Malkmus & Jicks - Real Emotional Trash [2008]

Hello there.
I just got back from hospital today where they enlightened my soul with a friggin 'Barium Meal or Barium follow-through(to be more accurate)'
Worst damn meal I ever had believe me!
If you've had one before then you know what I'm saying. If not, why not educate yourself a little whilst your here and read this.

Anyway, gurgling and spasming gut-ache aside, I got myself another new album yesterday for you.
Hard to believe for two in a row but...I like it!
Not as good as the Banhart one but I know half of you won't agree.

This seems quite different from another Malkmus album I posted a while back, his last one (I forget the name). It's a good collection of tracks though and I do recommend you give it a go.
I find myself struggling for a genre once again here. Any suggestions?
It might horrify you to hear my take on this album but here goes: It actually puts me in mind of Progressive Rock!
I used to listen to so many of the old Canterbury Scene english Prog-Rock bands back in my stoner days. (aah the memories....) bands like Camel, Caravan, Gong and many other lesser known ones.
The first song has a very Camel like bassline and from that track as the intro to the album, I just kept hearing other riffs and basslines in there that were close to Caravan et al.

Some lovely strung out solo guitar pieces that sound trippy and exciting ... with passion and music that builds and builds on layers until reaching a crescendo...then gently carries you off. Some of this is very like Emerson Lake and Palmer. If you like this and you never did the 'Prog Rock thing' then go and grab an album by ELP or Caravan or Camel or Steve Hillage.
You just might like it.
Bloody good music.
Let me bow out at that.

Real emotional Trash? Far from it.

Devendra Banhart - Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon [2007]

Hello folks.
I discovered this artist sometime recently...well when I say recently I am talking of during the time I have been doing this blog because I posted it on here when I first heard his last album and I thought it was great.
I really am pretty excited about this one he has put together as it's fucking brilliant.
Relaxing.
Uplifting.
Trippy.
All words that can be used to describe the tracks and overall effect of this album.
As for genre, that is quite a difficult one.
I just can't pigeon hole this album into a genre as each track is so different to the last yet somehow, it all goes together beautifully.
I really am impressed people!
Yes I did say that. Unusual for me I know but there you have it.
Is it folk? Hmm. I say not but I have read reviews that class it as folk music.
Easy listening? Maybe.
There are slants of every bloody style thrown in there and the result is a well crafted, almost immaculate work of art.
Am I 'bigging it up' too much?
Hehe.
I think Banhart has sat down with a few records from each decade since the thirties and taken a sample or riff from each one, layered and mashed it all together and then made it unique and his own.
The weird thing is, a track will come on and, if I was to hear it on its own say, on the radio or elsewhere out of the context of this fine album I wouldn't hesitate in stating just how much I don't like that kind of music. Yet here he has put together such a rich friggin tapestry that every single track, as surprisingly outlandish as it may be to the one heard previously, reaches your ears gently and subtly. Every track works as a part of the album and in the context of the album as a complete work.
The album carries every track, is what I am trying to get across here.
Even the tracks that I would normally class as a bit, uh, cheesy...they come across in an almost ironic and fun way.
It works.
Just listen to it and tell me I'm wrong then I'll shut up.
No I won't but you can try if you like.
Would be nice to get some opinions on this.
It works for me!
This is what I'd call 'music that is unexpectedly likable'!
Not only 'likable: fucking great more like!
Ciao.

M.Craft - Silver & Fire [2006]

Right I am off to get some sleep as it is now 4:10am.
I can't tell you a single thing about this album for the simple reason that I haven't friggin' listened to it yet!
I just wanted to be a smartarse by uploading it fast after the request appeared in the shoutbox.
Come on P! I at least expected a challenge..hehe.
This better be good after all my searching.
I think it is about time I gave you a 'searching the net' tutorial :P
Anyway here it is...

M. Craft - Silver & fire
1. Silver & fire (4:14)
2. Emily Snow (4:09)
3. You are the music (3:24)
4. I got nobody waiting for me (3:48)
5. Love know how to fight (3:32)
6. Lucile (3:36)
7. Dragonfly (3:16)
8. Snowbird (5:28)
9. Sweets (3:14)
10. Soldier (4:33)
11. Teardrop tattoo (6:09)

Want some info?
OK here you are.

This is an Indie album of a running time totalling 45 minutes and 27 seconds precisely, by someone who likes to be known as M.Craft which, I am assuming, is actually a reference to their real name.
If you want some real information then do a fucking google search you moron...what am I Amazon??? Wikipedia?

LeAnn rimes - Unchained Melody: The Early Years [1997]

Ok folks. Though it might seem a bit crap to some this post is actually quite good for me, it comes closer to what the site was originally about: Sharing music of all genres.
The fact that my opinion can sway either way never stopped me posting an album or a certain artist. I even posted gazza once. (if you know who that is shame on you!).
So I present you today with a requested LeAnn Rimes album. Actually someone by name of Kyle requested the track 'I will Always Love you' and this is the album it is to be found on. (If you have a requested musical choice then take a wee look over there on the right and leave a comment in the box. You might get lucky).
LeAn Rimes - Unchained Melody: The Early Years
My opinion?
A crock of sentimental shit.
But I'm a cynical prick.
My heart doesn't warm to stuff like this.
Maybe it's too cold from all the other crap I listen to.
Maybe I am just far too skeptical of open and unguarded emotions to enjoy music like this. Maybe I am just too 'English' to admit the truth that I really do LOVE this music?
Maybe, and this is the more favourable hypothesis, maybe, just maybe:
... the music just fucking sucks.
Yep. It just fucking sucks.
But hey!
Some people actually enjoy this shtick so, to those people I say:
Enjoy this album!
Hold your head up high and enjoy every track.
Always stand up for things you believe in!

OK todays lesson is over.
By the way I remember how I used to love that Unchained Melody track when I were a lad...it came out with that awful film 'Ghost' and coincided with my first ever EVER love. Teenage angst-ridden love.
Wow.
Oh the memories of learning to really kiss like a man.
Oh how simple life was.
I should be thanking LeAnn Rimes as hearing the song just now took me right back.
Heh.
