Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose [2002] & Acoustic EP [2001]

Hello my friends.
Well, I say friends but what kind of friends leave you talking to yourself in a corner with little inspiration above the cold wind howling through the cheap plastic window frames; coffee & cigarettes; pain and nausea with an urge to fall into a pit of self indulgent self pity?
Hehe.
So today I bring you a great band. I see they are classed as punk and for good reason as you will hear..
However, I heard the 'Acoustic EP' first and I am more into that one than the album. There is a great sound to it. It's quite raw but very melodic and definitely has soul. Although you can hear it is a group of guys almost messing around, they really do have something there and I wish they had more of the acoustic stuff. I plan to find out if they do so I'll keep you informed!

For that reason I recommend that you hear the Acoustic EP first too. Then, when you are suitably impressed you are more able to appreciate the punk sound that they are also very good at!
I mean, they are a bit more accomplished than The Pistols or a more modern so called punk band like erm, Green *cough-cough* Day *cough* Yeuurk!
They do the punk thing for sure but you can feel the melodies, the ability not just to play the instruments but to really fuckin' play them. Note this when you hear it.
If this seems a bit rushed it is because I just wrote it out and upped pictures etc then suddenly fucking Internet Explorer just disappeared in front of me! Gone!
fucking thing.
I knew there was a reason I don't use it much!

Jimi Hendrix: 'Straight Ahead Fanzine - All of the Audio parts.' DISC THIRTEEN & FOURTEEN [RARE!]

Another post for those ever wanting Hendrix fans. I joke of course!
As I gave you two disc sets at once the last time I reckon you are probably expecting nothing less this time too.
So be it.
Disc numbers Thirteen and Fourteen.
Like I have said a million or erm, about five times, I know little about this stuff other than what came with it; that means the titles of each track and a little more; there used to be a Hendrix Fanzine; created by a guy name of Steve Roby; it had an Audio section that was mailed out to subscribers; it stopped and died in erm..what year was it? Let me know will you.
Can I just remind the easily confused among you...
If you ever download a file or follow a link on this here website and you are shocked, stunned or surprised to see that the actual size of said file is either 1Kilobyte or 0Kilobyte(!) as reported by some filehosts, DO NOT CHANGE COURSE! What I mean is, just go ahead and download that file anyway. The link you will be after is inside that small file!
Maybe I will get less emails asking me why the file is corrupt and only a 1K file which they didn't bother to download...
If you want my advice: Always try everything you can think of and then ask for help! So download the small sized files ok?
Good stuff.

Listen to this! Mashup Has Matured

I don't want to bore you too much with my latest find but, I was so impressed by this.
Long gone are the days when mashups were just some vocal track laid over a recognisable backing or two tracks that fitted well together more or less playing together with one chorus and the other verses or that kind of simplistic thing.
Oh no.
When I listened to this I realised: These guys are now so talented..! This isn't just adding loops and drag and drop samples from different tracks, the guy that created this, especially the Adamski/ Killers one, is a craftsman! yes I did say that.
The two songs (well there are more in there but two main ones) are not just cut and pasted together, they have been pulled apart and a completely new arrangement has been cleverly crafted out of them. There is of course the verses of one song then the chorus of another but it goes a lot deeper than that: the way the music and the timings are arranged to fit the two together in some seemingly very difficult to achieve areas, it's just great.
I think they did an amazing job on it.
the Oasis track too is similar. Crafted out of the two tracks, The result is a completely new arrangement with surprises throughout.
I am not new to listening to these mashups but I obviously haven't listened to one for a while.
Just wanted you to hear these.
I got a few of them with these if you're interested, let me know.

10,000 Maniacs - In My Tribe [1987]

After I posted Howling Bells me ol' mate HitMeWithThis said it reminded him of the female vocalist from 10,000 Maniacs.
I had never heard of them. As usual.
This was just the first album I found.
I have since been listening and, whilst I am not truly amazed by it, the album is pleasant enough(!)

I'm not just an average misogynist ... what I mean is I am not one AT ALL (to make that point clear), yet, female singers ... well, I just haven't heard many I like. I mentioned this before here when I discovered the brilliant reggae singer Dezarie who had me blown away!

So I have a similar reaction with this vocalist. Natalie Merchant her name is. (I even went and got an album of hers, solo. May post it or may delete it: if you are interested in hearing it then tell me so!)
She can sing, definitely. She just doesn't do anything for me.
Doesn't even leave me cold.
Nothing.
It just goes over my head for some reason. Maybe my head is unnaturally small?
It could be that I just don't like this kind of music..hmm probably.
Yet they are damn popular so I must be missing something right?
Wrong.
Taste is subjective.
I don't like 10,000 Maniacs.
You might well love 'em!

Leonard Cohen - Live, BBC Television Theatre, London, 1968

I feel sad that I can't write more on this but health is such as it is. Today at least.
It's a live set at the BBC in 1968, by one of the greatest vocalists/poets of all time in my opinion.
Just a bloody beautiful listen. This was posted on another blog I discovered a couple of weeks ago and I noticed it isn't exactly widespread now; links have died all over the place: I present it here in all its glory.
I hope you can appreciate the melancholy and passion of Mr cohen.

Tracklist
01. You Know Who I Am (3:33)
02. Bird On The Wire (4:38)
03. The Stranger Song (6:17)
04. So Long Marianne (7:57)
05. The Master Song (7:37)
06. There's No Reason Why You Should Remember Me (2:08)
07. Teachers (3:57)
08. Sisters of Mercy (3:56)
09. Dress Rehearsal Rag (6:05)
10. Suzanne (3:51)
11. Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye (4:10)
12. Story of Isaac (3:59)
13. One of us Cannot Be Wrong (5:21)

Wow.
I just love track 11 so much.
Amazing.
So simple yet poignant!

[2002] Spikiri - King Don Father

Kwaito.
Heard of it?
Well I hadn't.
I found this with 'RAP' in the 'genre' section of the MP3 tags.
Oops.
I reckon that was a mistake.
I now know this genre is known as 'Kwaito' and is Soth African Hip-Hop based music with a difference!
~ ~ ~
I'm in a hurry as I really need to sleep and have had a long and hard day today. Kids holidays, illness, bla bla etc.
So I will just copy & paste some info on the music for you.
I will say this though I am so happy to be bringing you this!!
It was a hard to find one too and unfortunately, because of this, it is 128k bitrate but you still have to have a listen as it is unlike anything you've ever heard before!
Have a read of this article, courtesy of wikipedia.
Also for artist info, read HERE (NY Times, you may have to log in!), HERE, HERE or HERE.
(Not very much on this guy really to be found yet....someone needs to build him a website!)

Howling Bells - Howling Bells [2006]

I somehow came across this band the other day completely by accident. What I mean by that is that I wasn't looking for any music at that time, I was just aimlessly surfing the net trying to focus my mind from pain etc. I found a page where someone had uploaded a couple of tracks and was going on about how great this band was. I couldn't read that and then just go off without trying them for myself now could I?
Am I glad I did!
I now have them in my playlist on Winamp more than anything else (for now).
I love it!
Think 'Nick cave' meets 'PJ Harvey' meets Transvision Vamp (yes seriously) meets Siouxsie Sioux(get this - I have just been informed that they used to be a couple and I knew nothing of it!!)... meets that 90's UK Grunge sound.
Interesting mix?
I can't tell you enough times YOU MUST hear this.

Unfortunately I discover today that the so far brilliant and fast, unlimited file hosting service MEDIAFIRE.com, has now announced it will no longer be accepting password protected rar files.
Fair enough, bad news and all that but the most annoying thing is that they didn't actually fuckin' announce it; I uploaded a huge file there and when it had finally finished uploading the page refreshed with the message informing me of the new rule and saying the file would not be hosted there.
Might they consider just telling us BEFORE we upload something?
Damn.
On a lighter note, I just spent about a whole days worth of hours removing the worst virus I have even encountered. Ever.
It consisted of lots of separate files which all helped each other to stay active and stop me removing or deleting any of them. It is a horrible thing when you delete a file and it reappears right there in front of you.
Even more horrifying is when you try to run any of lots of security programs, even the registry editor and windows throws up an error saying the file cannot be found...when you are looking right at the file and it is definitely there!
I learned a lot today.
I learned about 'Image File Execution Options' which, you would hope you never have to. This part of your loving XP registry is where you can enter a file name and an alias which basically means, if I enter notepad and give it the alias iexplore.exe(the Internet explorer program file) then, any time anyone tries to run notepad internet explorer will open.
now, imagine if you have a huge list of every known antivirus program file written into there with the alias file all being redirected to the actual virus! Causing it to be executed multiple times any time you try to do anything! Then add to that the ability, whenever I open ANY explorer window, for a pair of files to be instantly created which are another part of the virus...I could go on.
One more thing, this seems to be a very new or little known about virus too.
A Google or any other search only brought back pages from China...and not many either.
I like a challenge though.
I won.
Heh.

For any of you not savvy in the area of computing generally: You have NOTHING to fear from any mp3 files or anything I upload!! The virus infects EXE files and DLL files only. Plus, you should scan everything you download anyway, not like me...I learned that much today: To stop being a twat and thinking I had an invincible PC!

[2005] Shivaree - Who's Got Trouble?

Wow.
I am so glad someone requested this album for I hadn't heard of this singer until then. I do remember her sound -and you might- from the Kill Bill SoundTrack.
You might not though.
You will however recognise that (well suited to Kill Bill) American-Bar-room-late-at-night' sound.
Sophisticated but not pretentious. Stylish and smooth.
Intimate; Her voice is piercing, yet not sharp(!)... reminds me of Tom Waits in places, not only due to the walking Basslines and obvious Blues roots.
This is a stunning album from a high class artist. Nothing more to say.
Don't miss out.
Her real name is Ambrosia Parsley. Heh.

[2007] Amon Tobin - Foley Room {advance}

Wish I had more time for this one but alas, my health is keeping me down today. A pretty amazing piece of work altogether this album. Quite a head-trip.
Literally. It's such a journey that it's almost too much to take in one sitting.
For me anyway.
I'll give you the notes I got with the album below which really gives a great review of it but I'll just say that this is electronic and ambient whilst being very 'machine' and haunting. Very haunting now I think of it. You'll see.
A couple of tracks I just had to skip over as the intensity of noise became too much for my delicate ears (hehe). Generally though this album gives an instant entry into some weird and wonderful world that you almost feel privileged to be privy to.
Yes I am being serious.
I was kind of surprised to read that this guy wrote the music for a Video Game..you might know of it - 'Splinter Cell'.
Surprisingly this isn't available until 5th March!
Not around these here parts though eh.

Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine

I kind of missed this band first time around.
I If remember rightly I used to say they were 'a bunch of vacuous morons' but ... well, I must have changed. Am I now a vacuous moron? Possibly.
Anyway, maybe it's a reflection of where I am in my life at the moment but I've been listening to them a lot and they rock, with attitude.
I got a few of their albums but the their self-titled is a great one so I bring it to you.
If you were, like me, dismissive of them in their day, I urge you to give them a try now. You might just like them. Their lyrics are surprisingly quite accurate at times! and even more surprisingly a bit more intellectually competent than I ever imagined. Don't get me wrong here I'm not saying they should enter any poetry contests or even apply to MENSA but they do make some cutting remarks in their songs now and then, especially in these war torn times.
Heavy rock and electric guitar sound, Thrash, American punk-rap. (That's for anyone who has never heard of them)
To be played LOUD.

[1993] P J Harvey - 4-Track Demos

Now I want to just give the link to the album someone requested in the comments of the PJ Harvey my woman posted the other day.
It's called '4-track Demos'. So if you requested it, here it is! Thus proving that I really do listen to what the people say and deliver what they want.
Ahem.

Enjoy it. (I sure didn't..hehe it is a lot more crude than the other album which I LOVE!) Great excuse for me to post some more pictures of the sultry lady though eh.

And if any of you want to put in a request for any album...what are you waiting for?
Let me know in the comments NOW!!

At The Drive In - [1996] Acrobatic Tenement and two EPs

Next up is another new (to me that is) band.
Not sure what to say about these.. Lets just say one word:
PUNK.
Noise yes, loud yes.
They are referred to on some review I read as 'visceral' 'punk-rock real deal' and compared to Nirvana's 'Teen Spirit' and Rage Against the Machines 'Killing in the Name of' both of which I rate pretty highly.
So although I am posting this I haven't really given them enough airtime to give a worthy review on them. I think they definitly have something, just a quick google search or a look on lastFM tells me that, so I'm willing to say I reckon they're a safe bet. Having heard a couple or so tracks I am inclined to agree so far.
Try them and see what you think.

This site is highly recommended and offers some rare tracks and a lot of info. I am reading it myself right now hehe!

I included two of their EPs as well as the album named above.
[1995] Alfaro Vive, Carajo! EP
[1997] El Gran Orgo EP

Sorry but it's all in one rar file cos it really wasn't so huge(77Mb) when all packed in one.

[1999] Jason Mraz - A Jason Mraz Demonstration

Hello folks.
A quick update today.
Pain is a little harsh so I can't type much.

Jason Mraz - A Jason Mraz Demonstration
I discovered this acoustic singer-songwriter over the weekend and instantly liked the sound. He is undoubtedly a hugely talented guy. I have to say though, weirdly, for me, I am ALREADY sick of hearing his voice!!
Hehe. I know it's crazy but that's the way it is.
He has the ability to sing from the heart and can go into some great vocal solo (if you want to call it that!) where he keeps strumming the guitar and just makes those kind of noises that you usually hear jazz musicians making...-be bop de bop bara bara boom de-aay etc- and actually manages to get away with it!
However, it is just that and his irritating confidence that finally got me thinking I just can't listen to this guy any more!
I never liked jazz but I am always willing to try any genre and especially acoustic. I love the typical lone singer-songwriter artist as I used to see myself as a bit of a one.
This guy is talented like I said. He can sing and he can play. Even now I love a couple of the tracks I heard and will play them in the future but I decided to stop looking for any more albums by him.
Please don't let me put you off.
You really MUST hear him because as I said he really is good!
I think I maybe overdid it and played it until I felt sick.
Or something.
Weird eh,

If it turns out people like this guy, I have a load of albums I got at the weekend and will gladly upload them for you!
Let me know in comments OK.

[2005] Chuck Jonkey - Charana: An Odyssey of India

To contrast the 'banging beats' of Infected Mushroom I picked an album I really am fond of that settles you down a bit and takes you on a journey that is a little more, well grounded..
I will tell you now: It is only of a mere 128K bitrate but it is all I can find of this release and believe me, it makes little difference surprisingly. I would be the first to complain of a low bitrate recording and how it ruins the experience, but I picked this up a while back and have listened to it a lot without even remembering it's of such a bitrate so please, don't be put off by it!
What we have here is a rather inventive and original mixture of traditional Indian sound and the instruments that go with it, notably Sitar and Drums, layered over some cool and hypnotic drumbeats and electronica, and some brilliantly worked in guitar. Bass riffs mixed with what sounds like Spanish Flamenco Castanets. It sounds like there are so many instruments in there at times, all fitting together, complimenting one another, offbeat timings, harmonies, the human voice chants, it really gets under your skin and into the nerve centre if you like(!). Some flamenco inspired guitar playing appears seemingly out of nowhere as if on the wrong track; but then you realise, it sounds just as natural as all the other sounds.

I don't know of any other band or album I could seriously compare this to.
Though this is most definitely Indian in roots, the influences that unfold are so many and varied that it makes this one of the finest soundscapes you might hear.
I am aware that this is tagged as 'New Age' and so a lot of people pigeon hole it or disregard it right away. I have to admit, I friggin' hate those new age shops where you go in and they have rack after rack of CD's with all this relaxation music and world music..none of it seems to have any soul. Just mass produced mass marketed pap.
This guy is different, methinks.
I just read on his site - he travels the world gathering experiences and collecting instruments..then he tries to convey that in his music. As well as making a huge profit no doubt.
Anyway it's bloody good stuff and I will be seeing if I can get any more soon.
Read his breakdown of this album on his page.

[2000] Infected Mushroom - Classical Mushroom

Psych-Trance giants from Israel bring a helping of high energy goodness and I love it. Or is that Progressive trance?
Not for everyone I know, these guys have some of the greatest techno rooted tunes I've ever heard. They must have some basis in Classical music...maybe they are students of some musical college somewhere?
Who knows.
I do know that they are slightly more intellectual in their music than other outfits of the genre. It's a really nice sound to hear classical arrangements, chords and melodies forming partnerships with a such a modern and Trance oriented dance beat. If you haven't experienced what this means then I urge you to give it a try...!
Apparently this is seen by those who know as their best album and some say it is THE trance album of the decade!
I would have to agree - though I don't exactly own many others!
Read more here and a bit more here (an Amazon.com reviews page but it is worth reading just how many people are saying how good this one is!).
