Lee 'Scratch' Perry - Upsetters 14 Dub Blackboard Jungle [2004]

This is a great one. Do you know, this was the FIRSt ever dub album?
I found this online a little while back and have been enjoying it in glorious 128k with all the track names in a bit of a mess and I honestly just don't have the in-depth knowledge to work out which tracks were correct and which weren't.
I got in touch with the blogspot resident 'Reggae and Dub genius/expert' and not only did he provide some interesting info about Lee Perry, he also provided this album for me...and you, in better 192k quality and it is the original release with all of the tracks in the right places...read more about it here.

Must go and rest now, enjoY the Music!

There are so many really good dub and reggae blogs around that it will be difficult to have a reggae series here without at some point, posting the same album as has been posted elsewhere...hmm. I will still attempt to not let this happen somehow!
More soon.

Beres Hammond - Can't Stop A Man [2003]

Beres Hammond. You've heard of him right?
No?
Guaranteed you will have heard some of his music...be it playing in the background in a restaurant or pub...lazy summer afternoon radioplay, somewhere sometime you WILL have heard more of these than you might have thought. that's what happened when I put it on at least!
I only knew of Beres for some great reggae tracks that, when I try to think of them, are just a smokey haze. Somewhere in my addled brain from the days when I ventured into hydroponic growing experimenting; I kept the name Beres Hammond in there flagged as someone worth looking into. Unfortunately I kind of forgot to look into it.
Today I changed that.
All in all I have to say the reggae has not let me down. Smooth and mellow is the simplest way of describing this guys style. There is nothing shocking or surprising to the senses guaranteed when you listen to this. Don't take that to mean it's boring: Far from it. It induces relaxation. It makes you sit still, your mind and body welcomes such a treat. Well, mine does.
I was surprised however to hear some non-reggae tunes on here. Unfortunately(for me) the very first track is some kind of soul-cheese tune and I won't analyze it further: Suffice it to say I cannot stand soul music. I find it has no soul. I know I must be in the minority here but, well who gives a fuck. It's shite and that's that ok.
Gladly, Beres doesn't include many of his crap soul smoothy cheesy tunes on this album - which is a compilation of his best- and the reggae beats flow thick and fast/ erm, slow.
My rating is: bloody brilliant.

Beres Hammond take a bow, you're cool.

Hey! I bet this is good music for the old intimate relations thingy...

Bob Dylan - Hardest To Find (LOST DIAMONDS 1986-96) Superb Rarities Bootleg

No this is not reggae or Dub. I am aware of that. I just know you're gonna like this one.
I won't pretend to be some(nerdy) bootleg expert who has everything catalogued and documented and could tell you what fucking hat dylan was wearing at his concert in athens circa 1973(there wasn't one). I can only do a cut n paste job for this album as info is a bit sketchy online. Whenever I find some information about it, it is really only the tracklist and bare minimum of details about the duets on it. A few of the dates and places were missing though and I finally managed to track them down and put them in order so now it's complete.

T R A C K L I S T

01. It Ain't Me Babe Tacoma -Washington 31/7/86
02. Blowin in The Wind Peter Paul Mary Stevie Wonder -Washington 20/1/86
03. Got Love If You Want it -Argentina Jan 1988
04. Important Words Promo 2/5/88
05. Mr Tambourine Man The Byrds Roy Orbison Tribute 24/2/90
06. Most Of The Time Single 1990
07. Old rock And Roller First and ONLY recording ever done! -Hamburg Scadtpark Germany 7/3/90
08. People Putting People Down Rare live -Rome Italy 6/6/91
09. Tupelo Honey with Van Morrison -Belfast Ireland 6/2/91
10. Crazy Love with Van Morrison -Athens 27/6/89
11. Foreign Window with Van Morrison -Athens 27/6/89
12. One Irish Rover with Van Morrison -Athens 27/6/89
13. One Irish Rover with Van Morrison -Finsbury Park London 12/6/93
14. Forever Young -David Letterman N.Y 18/11/93
15. Hard Times with Willie Nelson May 93
16. I Shall be Released -Nara City Japan 22/5/94
17. Ring Them Bells -Nara City Japan 21/5/94
18. Ring of Fire Soundtrack Feeling -Minnesota US 1996
19. Knockin On Heaven's Door -Ferrara Italy 5/7/96

It wasn't difficult to find out that there is a series of bootlegs with the title 'Hard To Find volume x', I assume because they are compilations of tracks that are hard to find.
Wasn't that hard.

Hugh Mundell - Mundell ~Digitally Remastered~ [2004]

Unfortunately the gap between the sofa, the bed and the computer chair in my house has grown considerably today. As dictated by my state of health which seems to deteriorate faster than Tony Blair or G.W Bush's integrity at the moment.
However I have brought you the second DUB album in a series of well,...quite a few more to come.
Needless to say my health also dictates the amount I can write and today that amount is nearly nothing at all as I feel the need to go back and lie down as I type this.
Just get the album ok!
If you want more info on this great guy then here's a couple of links for you to check out:
Info1
Info2
Info3

In a nutshell: this guy recorded his first session at the age of 13, recorded his debut album (Africa Must Be Free By 1983) at 16 years old, and by 20yrs had released over 5LPs! He was working with another great 'Augustus Pablo' usually being produced by Augustus, he wrote all his own lyrics and was destined to be a great among Dub reggae stars. He was shot dead in a car when he was

Sorry I can't post more about him but hopefully I'll be in better health than this soon.

Dezarie - Gracious Mama Africa [2003]

If I am ever called upon to name what I consider to be the best or my personal favourite female artists I have a problem. Call me a misogynist or Chauvinist pig(which I am definitely not as I just ADORE women! Especially the female form) but no matter how hard I rattle my brain, I struggle to think of any female singers, bands or artists that I like to listen to. My music collection is almost exclusively male except for the more generic 'world' music or classical stuff that would sound crap were it not for the strength of the female vocals. Pink Floyd too..A lot of their stuff would be flat if you removed the female vocals. That isn't my point here though: I am talking about a female band or artist in their own right, not as a part of another male oriented band!!
Ok I will try just as a test...
1. Sophie Ellis Bextor
2. Bjork
3. Madonna
4. Kylie Minogue
5. Geri Halliwell from the Spice Girsl!

Ok now let me explain the above choices. Can you see any kind of pattern? A thread that links them all and I have to say it isn't their voices!
I always thought Sophie Ellis Bextor was cute. She has the face of an angel. aaw. So that's why she tops the list!
Bjork also has a strong face. Her features are very Icelandic and that is great. She's a bit weird too so I like her!
Madonna? Need I debase myself further by trying to explain this one? She is a sexy female!
Kylie Minogue is also a sexy female!
Geri Halliwell used to be a very attractive lady/girl(!) but nowadays she has turned into a victim of the media/success and insecurity. When she was a fresh-faced spice girl I always thought she was the cutest one.

So as you can see from the above, I do not have a favourite female singer. Not one who I like for their SINGING right?!

The point behind all of this is now coming:
I found a female singer that literally left my jaw open and dropped on the floor. I am listening to her now and I am struggling to find the words to convey how fucking impressed I am at this album dammit!
I can't just say DOWNLOAD IT NOW OR YOU ARE A FOOL but it's worth a try anyway.

I'd feel bad if I didn't include a picture of Dezarie too..actually she's not bad! So great singer and cute!

Maybe this will help you decide..

Review (taken From ireggae.com)
Roots empress Dezarie has blessed the reggae community with the deliverance of her newest recording "Gracious Mama Africa". Released on the Afrikan Roots Lab record label, this album emerges from the seeds planted on her amazing debut album of 2001 "FYA".
Gracious Mama Africa transports the incredible voice of Dezarie to a whole new level - the highest heights. Her foundation is firmly established in songs such as "Travelers" and the title track. The brilliance and clarity of Dezarie’s voice is reverently unveiled on "Exhalt". Gracious Mama Africa abounds with pleas for social justice and racial equality with selections like "Poverty", "Strengthen Your Mind" and "Justice".
But to this listener, the strength and power of Dezarie is most strikingly displayed in her condemnation of so-called civilization. "Gone Down", "Not One Penny", "Law Fe De Outlaw", "Slew Dem An Done" and "Judgment Come" all deliver conscious punches that penetrate the soul.
"Do what you want, wheresoever you please. Bombing Vieques, yes your bombing the seas. Lock up anyone that was opposing. Speaking against the nonsense that you were doing. But babylon you gone down, you gone down. Babylon funeral, you gone down." - Dezarie
After receiving Atlanta’s "Best New Female Reggae Artist" award in 2001, Dezarie returned to her native island of St. Croix. Since that time, she has been working closely with Midnite, the players of instruments for "Gracious Mama Africa". Midnite’s trademark sound is fully displayed on this album. Momentous bass lines from Phillip Merchant, classic one-drop from Dion Hopkins and the bubbling of Ron Benjamin on keyboards prevail throughout, accentuated by Abijah’s charismatic guitar playing.
From the excellent overdubs of Dezarie’s voice to the flying symbols on "Slew Dem" it is evident that Ron Benjamin worked tirelessly in the production and mixing of this album. The fruits of this labour are eloquently displayed on Gracious Mama Africa which is sure to be one of the best roots albums of 2003.

Please you lot, do yourself a favour and get a hold of this album. I am addicted to it. Lying out in the garden yesterday in the blazing hot sun, it fitted the surroundings and atmosphere perfectly Relaxing and mellow with a beautiful voice put to some serious dub beats.

Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam [2006]

Right. I must confess to having somewhat missed the boat as far as Pearl Jam goes. I always used to see them as the music that spotty melancholy teenagers used to listen to, the grungey kids that liked to dwell on just how unfair and bad life was whilst at the same time doing absolutely fuck all to change it!
Ahem.
Meanwhile back in the present, things are changing. I listened to this for the first time yesterday and well, let's just say it certainly isn't melancholic or depressing. Unless I am actually depressed and therefore unable to be objective? Hmm. Maybe.
This is good solid rock music in a fine form. It can be heavy and verging on the metal side of music but then it can come back and hit you with a slower track like 'Come Back' which is acoustic and mellow.
The whole album has many sounds in there from heavy metal to grunge(!) to indie(whatever that actually means these days) and verging on Punk. Then there are drum sequences that are reminiscent of certain Pink Floyd excerpts, guitar solos that wouldn't sound out of place on a number of prog-rock albums and vocals that are strong and consistent throughout. The singer has a likeable voice and I am liking it. Seriously, it's all in there.
I could really like this shit!
I never thought I'd say it but here it is again just to be sure..
Pearl Jam are pretty good.
Download it now!

Vivaldi - 5 Violin Concertos, Viktoria Mullova, IL Giardino Armonico

Ok It's classical.
It's something I have loved listening to ever since I downloaded it sometime over the past few weeks and I recommend you do the same.
Violins. Aaah.
Don't expect me to pretend I know jack shit about it but I just know what good music is(as you can tell by my previous posts right!).
I don't even understand the naming conventions here with Classical music.
All that Italian (is it?) in the title there, I haven't a clue what each part is referring to so if you would care to educate me I would be thrilled.
UPDATE: A simple google search revealed that 'Viktoria Mullova' is a Russian violinist of the highest caliber! Hmm interesting. She ain't bad looking either, got that certain 'ruskie' appeal...hehe.
I like a woman that can play an instrument.(!)
Also, Il Giardino Armonico means.. An ensemble, the 'band' if you like, that also plays on this alongside Viktoria.
It is so simple when you have google.
Read more of both by clicking the links.
Great.
Download it and keep waiting for this place to rise again soon.

I hate to keep saying it but my health is difficult in the extreme right now so I am trying to get this place updated and do other things to get the site to grow but the pace is a lot slower because of my health.
Patience is a good thing so hang on to it.

Arctic Monkeys - Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys [EP]

Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?
A question you might well start asking yourself after hearing this latest effort from the oh so young crowd from Sheffield. Or you could even try 'Why The Fuck am I interested?'.
Nothing new, nothing interesting.
Who the fuck are they anyway.
Balls.

CAMEL - On The Road 1981 and some relaxation therapy...

I will start off today with a little advice for you. For free.
If you ever find yourself getting up in the night due to insomnia or whatever other reason you might have that means you cannot sleep and are forced to get up and stay awake(!)...then your priority by daybreak has to be getting yourself relaxed.
Here is my recipe.
Fill yourself a bath. When the water is running -slowly- with equal hot and cold water filling the bath(can't have it too hot or the oils will burn), you need to put some oils in. Essential oils of course. Only the best will do.
Put 4 drops of Lavendar oil
Put 3 drops of Peppermint oil and finish off with
2 drops of Sweet Fennel oil.

I have been doing this for years and I have to say it's great. Relaxes you but the peppermint seems to give you a wakefulness that makes you feel alive! The fennel gives your lungs and breathing a lift.
Try it.
Now: Put some laid-back music on.
I know there are a million albums I could list but I will just give you a couple of ideas of albums I like to put on:
Obscured By Clouds - Pink Floyd
On The Road 1981 - Camel
Any album By Armik...Flamenco guitar usually does the trick.
Amélie By Yann Tiersen [OST] is a good one too.

I'm sure you have more ideas.
You get the general feeling.
Then go sit in the bath for at least 1hour.

Great.

=======================

Now you might just want to download this album.
It is by the second-greatest band from the 1970's that sprung up out of the area of Kent...the areas in and around Canterbury were known for the sheer amount of musicians that were around there, collaborating, forming bands, switching bands, weaving and ducking and diving in a mass genetic pool of great and progressive musicians. I will be bringing you most of those in due course.
Arguably one of the best bands to come from this was the band I give you today:
Camel
Arguably one of the best albums they released is also the one I give you today though I am not so arrogant to imagine that this is an entirely subjective point and I could be wrong, in your eyes.

Tracklist
1. Never Let Go ( 7:03)
2. Song Within A Song ( 7:20)
3. Lunar Sea (10:50)
4. City Life ( 4:43)
5. Nude ( 0:27)
6. Drafted ( 3:55)
7. Docks ( 4:06)
8. Beached ( 3:34)
9. Landscapes ( 3:22)
10. Changing Places ( 3:31)
11. Reflections ( 2:24)
12. Captured ( 3:19)
13. The Last Farewell ( 4:04)

If you know Camel and their pretty large discography then you will no doubt like this album and probably own it already. I owned it on vinyl which is no good to me now having gotten rid of my player a while ago. So 'finding' this in MP3 was great for me.
If you don't know Camel then I really want you to try it. Think relaxing music with a bit of cleverness, an edge, brilliant meandering guitar solos, keyboards that don't go all 'rick wakeman' on you yet have some beautiful expressions to show you, not least the timing of the beats can really get into your head. Camel have a few tracks where they do unusual time signatures. If you know little about the technicalities then I won't bore you. Just think of how most songs will have a beat that you can tap '1-2-3-4 and,' to yes?
Well Camel will use the odd beat tha you might describe as '1-2-3-4-5-6-7 and (1)..etc' or even just the three '1-2-3-1-2-3' (Think ocean color scene riverboat song?).
Anyway I'm rambling so have a listen and let me know what you think.
