Jim White - Wrong Eyed Jesus (1997)

Hello again so soon!

I did say I had a great album for you and this is the truth!
In fact, what better Christmas gift to you could I leave!!
I am leaving for the train station in about ten minutes so, forgive me for not writing much here!!

There is a documentary/film with the same name, or more accurately 'Searching for the Wrong-eyed Jesus' which is a BBC thing and sounds really interesting. so I am going to get that also and maybe share the film here too if you want?

I got the music a while back and I just love the guys voice. The lyrics are poetry in motion too.
This guy is one of those rare finds. Like the Bob dylans and the Tom Waits before him. He has that special something.
Listen and you will see.

Expect more of him soon after I get back.

OK folks, have a good one as they say!

See you in a week or so.

Christmas, Commercialism and Britney Spears Naked pics

MERRY XMAS

Well my friends, no sooner do I look around my life and it appears another year has drizzled by without my noticing it too much.
I usually am the type of person who, when it gets to Xmas, people jolly and all that shit, I get irritated and don't really enjoy taking part!
Yep, I am a miserable git!

For those of you wondering about the Britney Spear Naked Pics reference in the title, scroll down and you will see....

I have one of those unfortunate voices...you know, the type that tries so hard to sound convincing and sincere but, for some strange reason... I always come off sounding like a sarcastic, ungrateful bastard!
Imagine the scenario:
My friend hands me a gift and I open it.
As I unwrap it, I realise it is something I really have wanted for myself for ages and am so pleased to see it there!!!
I utter something like 'Wow' Oh this is great!!' and as I look at his face it is obvious that my comments sounded so sarcastic that they sounded to him, more like 'Oh great...what crap is this!'
If I carry on and try to sound even more convincing it usually just makes a deeper hole for me...
I finish opening the gift and declare...'no really, I have been wanting one of these for ages'
I can see and hear that it sounded like I was trying to convince him I liked it, when in actual fact I thought it was shit.
The look on everyones face in the room is also one of 'What an ungrateful shit he is eh..'
I'm sure you get the idea.
However!! this is NOT the reason I like to become Ebeneezer Scrooge at yuletide. The reason for this is a few really.
I detest the commercial aspect of it.
There is no traditional Xmas holiday any more.
It is ALL about buying.
Buy this!
Buy that!
Yes it is made of cheap plastic and won't last longer than by Easter but by then you can buy more crap!
BUY!
BUY! BUY!

Kids! Get your parents to buy this!
Get them to buy more!!

It all fucking sucks balls.
Also people don't get into the much fabled 'spirit of Christmas' any more do they...?
People are still as fuckin' miserable as ever in the streets as far as I can see.
Me too though so I'm not helping eh?
Whatever.
I'd love a return to the Christmas days of old times (the romantic ideal I have in my mind probably never existed anyway but I like it!).
A family, a big meal with everyone helping out, setting the table etc. A roaring log fire where we site after the meal and watch some crap family movie by Disney or whatever.
Then the alcohol comes out if it hasn't already and for the rest of the day people gorge themselves on their particular thing: Drinking, smoking, eating, more eating, more drinking...etc.
Then it ends with a few embarrassing incidents with drunken Father or something along those lines!
Oh and the gifts would all be wooden..hehe.
And the kids should get, in their Xmas stocking...a piece of fruit. And they would be really thankful for it!
Heh. Now I am talking absolute fantasy!!
Kids - fruit?
Paaah.

humbug.

Do I have any music for you...erm, not really I am afraid but I think I upped some tom waits boots a week ago so let me see if I have those links.
Hang on!!
I just remembered I wanted to share some Jim white stuff with you...I love this guy. An album called Wrong-eyed Jesus is brilliant and I will post this...you must hear it!
I am not very well prepared because....
I am leaving today for a week away to have Xmas with my Mum.
so this is the first Xmas for a few years where I have decided to actually get into it!

MERRY XMAS!

===============

Check the next post for music. If there aint one, then there aint any this time.
When I return on Sunday 29th, after a day of rest I will post some great tunes OK.
Hope you all have a good time over the holidays.
Whatever you may do.

Fancy a bit? (probably not actually, those are guys! hehe)

The Britney Spears Naked Pics reference in the title?

I just thought I'd let the people come via google under false pretences.
I mean, they shouldn't be searching for such thiongs anyway.
Perverts.

Tom Waits - KPFK FolkScene LA [7-23-74]

I seem to have posted the Tom Waits bootlegs in the wrong order.
Well, who cares. Really.
I just should have had this one up before the previous one if I want to have chronological order but shit happens eh.
Not a lot does seem to be happening lately. I can only -yet again - apologise for this lack of activity but the nature of this illness I have is that some days are good, some days are bad...the problem is that sometimes the bad days come one after the other for a long time and so no good days appear. I'm in that kind of situation right now.

MUSIC!

Well I don't want to outdo myself after my previous descriptions of these Tom Waits bootlegs so I'll stick to what I know:
Yes it's another great show!
Hehe.
I'm no reviewer my friends, I just like the music and right now it's difficult for me to find the words. Painkillers and all that.
If you are still avoiding these posts then take this opportunity and download this one!! You cannot visit this site and NOT be at least tempted to become a Tom Waits fan.
I urge you to try it if you are not a fan right now!
If you are then you may well want to hear this ;) you will know what to expect from Tom, especially back in the day of these bootlegs.
He was raw!!

Tom Waits - San Diego Folk Festival [4-19-74]

Hello again. I think, whilst I await my encoding of theme Time for this week, I will treat you to the next in the series of posts of Tom Waits Bootlegs.

This one is, as I will describe probably all of them to you, a great listen.
Way back when the earth was young and Tom Waits didn't look like a grandpa (hehe) he had a really definitive voice.
Much more, in my opinion, than he does today.
Most artists I find kind of grow into their voice and as they age it gets to sound even better but I think Waits is the exception here. I don't mean that to sound like I think he has a shit voice these days - I don't.
I just think that back in the day, the day that this show is from, he had something close to god-like when he sang certain songs and hit certain raspy noted with that gravelly growl of a voice.
You may or may not agree.
How will I ever know you never leave a friggin' comment.
Heh.

I'm no bootlegs expert-nerd that knows everything.
In fact, I know little more than nothing.
I do know what sounds good though and this is it.

I can give you a tracklist of course!

1. Better Off Without a Wife (2:31)
2. On a Foggy Night (3:41)
3. Shiver Me Timbers (3:47)
4. Fumblin with the Blues (3:04)
5. San Diego Serenade (3:07)
6. Glad That You're Gone (3:54)
7. Ice Cream Man (2:31)
8. Depot Depot (3:25)
9. The Ghosts of Saturday Night (4:07)

Duration : 30:11

Wow.
Listening to this just serves as another reminder that ...
I was born in the wrong decade.

(Mind you, I'd be older now if I had been born earlier...Hmm fuck that. Feel old enough).

Jimmy Smith - Six Views of the Blues (1958) REMASTERED

Bananas and rice. Confused? I am currently on what is called an Exclusion diet - to attempt to distinguish any foods that make my Crohn's disease symptoms worse from the ones that don't affect it at all. Or that is how the theory goes. It's not difficult to be on it, just very boring at times. As I only started it less than three weeks ago I am at the moment only able to pick my 'meals' from a list of about 12 or 15 different foods. Bananas and Rice being what I just had today so far.
Just thought I'd share that with you!

MUSIC!.........
Before I start let me apologise to any of those Jazz aficionados who know everything from the beginning of time to the present day and all that is JAZZ.
I don't know much that is JAZZ. I think the closest I come to JAZZ is when I put on some Gong! So, forgive my inadequacies and let me just talk about the music without the facts and dates and times and all of that crap.
Thanks :)
This album is of the BLUE NOTE variety which may mean something to you, it may not. to me it's a mark of quality. Even wikipedia thinks so. (Even they say it is a JAZZ label). I have heard a few albums from them by now and some great unknown artists (unknown to me of course, but it was always blues music, not Jazz...anyway let's not get into that too much).
I'm not sure how this will go down but after listening to it last night and again right now I had to post it. I always tended to sway more towards Blues music generally but, when I am listening specifically to blues I never used to like the more Jazzy stuff.
I don't know but I still feel that so much jazz music reminds me of shopping mall or elevator music.
Game show stuff or something.
I struggle to enjoy so much Jazz I have heard so I don't listen to it much.

The reason I'm talking jazz is that this blues music is on the cusp, you might say, of Jazz and Blues.
It could be classed as both no doubt as there's no mistaking those deep blues riffs and yet there's a lot of Jazz style going on.
Strange to say: I love it.
If you want a pleasant, relaxing listening experience then go for it.
It's what you might call a very cerebral experience. Almost feels like the old brain cells are dancing...hehe...if you listen carefully you'll understand that comment.
I recommend a joint of not too strong marijuana, or a glass of wine, sit back and unwind.
If you can't do that then pop it on the personal player or ipod and go to the nearest shopping mall ... heh.
(I was joking there)

Hey I just thought, I might have actually mentioned the details of the album too eh?

well as you seen from the title its called:
Jimmy Smith - Six Views of the Blues
1. St. Louis Blues (8:42)
2. The Swingin' Shepherd Blues (3:59)
3. Blues No. 1 (6:30)
4. Blues No. 3 (7:13)
5. Blues No. 4 (10:52)
6. Blues No. 2 (9:06)

Jimmy Smith (Hammond B-3 organ)
Cecil Payne (baritone saxophone)
Kenny Burrell (guitar)
Art Blakey
Donald Bailey (drums)

It apparently was unreleased for a long time and only made the light of day 40 years AFTER it was recorded!
This Jimmy Smith guy (hehe) was quite a thing back then. If you, like me, are virtually oblivious to his existence then I urge you to do what I'm doing myself right now...go read some info on him.
I checked out a couple of pages that I'd recommend just to get an idea of who this guy was (he died in 2005) because he seems to have been a major player in the development of music as we know it today.
Wikipedia (of course)
Dedicated Jimmy Smith site (Go!)
All About Jazz biography of Jimmy Smith (a great link!)
Hardbop Jimmy Smith Page
Allmusic.com Biography of Jimmy Smith

There. You learn something new every day.
Well I did today at least.
