Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention - Freak Out! [1966] GUEST BLOGGER TODAY! {{Stoner Collection #02}}

===-Stoner Music Collection Entry Number 002-===

Hello again my friends...
first off I just have to point out that, nope, I hadn't neglected to notice something that is really crap around here (and I don't mean my 'reviews') and that is these extra large sized Capital Letters starting each new post.
It looks crap. It doesn't quite fit into the stream of writing at all and I want to get rid of it but I'm not sure what way to go with it...
anyway, that's all very interesting right?

Ladies and Gentlemen!
Let me introduce, today's exclusive Guest Blogger for the day...

My 9 year old son, James!

I must add that the photograph has been subjected to a few random and funny filters so he doesn't always (or ever!) look like that!

As James is not so well versed in writing on blogs or indeed doing much writing at all if he can help it, I told him to sit down and I put on this album. I gave him some guidelines of what people might want to know about the album and left him to write some stuff.
If we get more than two lines then we are doing good!

Why didn't I do it?
Well a couple of reasons...I always planned to see if James would do this for me as I think it would be interesting so that's the first reason, the second is that I am not and never really have been a Zappa Aficionado.
I don't know why ... I just don't really get his music. I know, you're not supposed to get it right?
Well I don't.
Although I love the album that goes on about religion and has the track 'Heavenly Bank Account' on it. That's because it appeals to my beliefs though and it's hilariously funny!

I now hand you over to today's Guest Blogger...

Hello my name is James and I am nine. My Dad asked me to do a review of this album.
I will just type the stuff I wrote on a piece of paper when I was listening to this album now cos my dad gave me a list of some things I should try to explain when I hear it and what it makes my mind feel like and what I imagine when I close my eyes to it.
I quite like the song: Who Are The Brain Police cos it sounds like Gong and I really like Gong.
The song at track number 4 is like an old fashioned love song and I don't like it.
I don't really like most of the songs but Who Are The Brain Police is my fave song.
My mind says "I hate this album" (and so do my eyes when I close them!)
Don't buy this album it is RUBBISH!
From James.

The Monks - Black Monk Time [1966] {{Stoner Collection #01}}

===-Stoner Music Collection Entry Number 001-===

Damn! All I had to do was post the album in position number one of the list I was telling you about in my last post. Just look at a list, get the album at the beginning of it, have a good few listens to said album, take the title etc of said album and, post it on the blog.
Well I somehow posted the wrong one!!!
The FIRST one in the list of Stoner Rock albums that everyone should hear (apparently) is...

The Monks - Black Monk Time (1966)
Well I must admit before going any further here, I had never heard this until today AND, I hadn't even heard of the band so ... if that makes me a shite music blogger with no idea about music then so be it.
In fact there's a few on the list that I haven't heard of so got a lot to look forward to.
I love discovering 'new' artists, that's what it's all about right?

This band are interesting.
I am a bit stuck on what tags I should be choosing to put this into a certain genre.
They don't fit too well in any to be honest. I know I can just cop-out and select 'stoner collection' and of course, 'rock' but It's deeper than that: On first listen to this album I was pretty mesmerised. The first track hits you right off the start with the pounding drumbeat. The vocals jump in with faint memories of 'The Doors' and the lyrics are quite cutting, referencing Vietnam and quite angry. A forward moving beat with some great organ behind it, Doors fans will start to feel pretty comfortable but ... don't get too comfortable!
There are a few surprising twists and turns on this record.
The second track, again, kicks off with the beat. Pounding drums and then it eases a bit when the organ creeps in to help it out and back it up...The organ isn't so much 'Doors' on this track as maybe early 'Floyd' - well, that is, if I MUST keep trying to compare this...which is a bad habit I have.
It's a very experimental song and I have to say I like it. :-)
A total gear change for the next track ... all 1 minute 26 seconds of it! I won't try to compare this track, it's just a cool surfy/garage rock tunes and again, it gets my thumbs up!
The same goes for most of the tracks on this. I can't say there is a track I really dislike. Perhaps a couple or three that would irritate me if I wasn't in the right frame of mind but all in all this is just a great piece of work and deserves to live in every collection!
I was pleasantly surprised to hear something very Syd Barret-ish too..see if you can spot what I'm talking about. It isn't difficult!
Later on there are obvious signs of 'surf rock' and more than a hint of The Beach Boys' thrown into the mix.
There are so many different styles and brilliantly arranged riffs in there that this album really is a classic and, as such deserves to appear on probably most lists or collections of music from the days before music went corporate! (When was that exactly?)
I regret not having heard or known of this until 2009 however, better late than never and now it's YOUR turn!

That is all.

Now go forth and listen.

Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (1965){{Stoner Collection #07}}

===-Stoner Music Collection Entry Number 007-===

Hello hello hello.
It will soon be that pagan celebration time known as 'Christmas'.
Oh fuck.
Don't you just hate it?
I mean REALLY dislike it?
Let me get something clear here: I suppose 'hate' is too strong a term but I really do get irate when the corporate world/capitalist world makes us; the public; society; the suckers that suck up their media, have a so-called 'holiday season' that is nothing more than a huge, all out, no-holds-barred marketing ploy, done with such attention to detail that they leave nothing to chance for those who wish to perhaps NOT makes themselves poor for the sake of buying their kids or their family or friends some 'gifts' that bring them close to bankruptcy or at least a huge overdraft or emptying of the credit card limit, and for what?
Do people really believe in the Xmas spirit?
Please don't get me wrong.
I am all for anything that enables people to get together. People spending time with each other - Families, friends etc. I am all for any situation or event that enables people to feel free of the usual social restraints and stuff and be true and caring towards each other. So they can give each other a gift and maybe even tell them how much they love them.
Letting people know how much you care about them is one of the greatest things you can do as a human being, to another.
The problem is people...no one fucking bothers too much about that part of it!!!
Christmas is all about BUY! BUY! BUY!
I fucking detest it!!
I hate the way my son is supposed to be, like all his friends, desperate to have the latest this or that and, what really pisses me off, he is supposed to feel bad, even ashamed, if he cannot obtain the gift that is the latest fashionable gift to have.
If you told your kids these days 'We don't have enough money so this year we are going to have a nice cosy Christmas at home with a nice meal and spend some great family time together' they would be so disappointed that they might not even bother getting out of bed that day!
I don't expect the kids of today to appreciate a stocking with an apple and an orange in it (like we used to get eh?! he-he!) but I do wish parents - and the fucking media! - would at least still try to instill the sense of value in them, let them know that they should be grateful. Let them understand that things cost money and that you don't always get what you want in life. Let them see that there are kids in the world that don't even have clean water, never mind a friggin' xbox360!
If you did tell them these things they wouldn't care. They'd just think you were being cheap for not getting them an xbox360 and they'd surmise that all the stuff you just told them was all part of your bullshit excuse to justify not buying it for them.
You cannot win.
My main beef with Xmas is that our kids and, to a great extent, many many adults, are being brainwashed by the barrage of marketing by all the forms of media we put upp with today. Christmas follows Halloween. It will soon be Easter and then valentines day. Or is it the other way around?
I don't know.
Or care.
Rant over!

Music?
You are looking for music?
Oh yeah, well you came to the right place then!

I recently joined a music site. I won't tell the name in this climate of UK Government piracy bills and the paranoia surrounding torrent sites and all that crap...but!
I mentioned it for one reason: They have lists of albums and categories for all genres and styles you could ever dream of.
One such list is of 'stoner' music. In case you aren't educated even that much (fuck man you need to get back to school you thick twat!) I will just enlighten you: This is the kind of music a stoner (someone who smokes cannabis, probably a lot of it) would listen to. Usually this means the music is either of the type that takes yopu on a journey of sounds and great expanses that you can hang your stoned head on, whilst the music virtually controls you...or it can be reggae music, music that glorifies cannabis and sings about it, music that is just bloody brilliant (as the stoner generally can appreciate many forms of music probably due to the fact that ingesting cannabis causes you to have an enhanced musical experience in general - try it it's great!).
Well I hope that's a bit clearer.
Clear as mud probably.

So, I decided to go through this very long list and, starting with the band at position 1, I will post every one here, one by one, letting you hear and then hopefully leave your reviews in the comments.
I am not assuming everyone here is a stoner - far from it.
The reason for this list to be the one /I have chosen is simply that it has so many different genres and a lot of great bands and artists in there that I have posted before and of course a lot I haven't.
In fact, forget the stoner part.
Just look upon each posting as an album and give it a try to see what you think!
That's all you have to do OK.
It's not friggin' complicated.
If you need any help though, don't ask me.
Oh yeah, one more thing. these albums are not in order of who is the greatest or anything like that. The list is just in chronological order (the oldest ones are first).

So!!!
First up!!
Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (1965)

Here's a little info on the band, stolen from wikipedia. If you want more click the link.
Iron Butterfly is an American psychedelic rock band, known for music such as 1968 hit "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". Their heyday was the late 1960s, but the band has been reincarnated with various members. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is the 31st best-selling album in the world, selling more than 25 million copies.

First impressions after listening to the album?
Hmm. Hippies.
I used to want to be a bit of a hippie and even lived the lifestyle - to a point. However those times are gone and nowadays I don't grow my hair long and I certainly don't listen to Iron Butterfly.
The thing is I would never have listened to them even back then because they are what I would call 'Formulaic Hippie Shit'.
Now, before anyone gets annoyed and starts telling me how wrong I am and how this band were so influential etc etc. Let me just say I am telling you how I see it.
I may be wrong, of course. I'm not an oracvle of fucking wisdom.
I am just saying, Iron butterfly=hippie shit.
there you have it.
It's the kind of music you would hear on a woodstock type movie or some film from the sixties and there'd be people with flowers in their hair, dancing with their arms steretched out, spinning around in circles, to make the acid feel so much better.
I don't mind these kinds of tunes in that context but, seriously, when I put this album on I thought...oh shit, how long does this go on for?
It seemed to go on forever.
I'm not usually against music from that era but there are certain bands and certain music that does do my head in and Iron Butterfly fit the bill.
Annoying, whining on, hippie shit.
As I always said, don't listen to me: I KNOW NOTHING!
Download it and try for yourself.
I mean, they can't have such a huge following and fans for no reason I suppose.
Some people actually love this music.

You may be one of them.
Have a listen and then please, tell me what exactly it is that makes you like them.
Of if you listen and agree with me, even better! Leave a comment stroking my ego!
See you soon folks.
