The Great Hunger: The Songs of Shane MacGowan

Hello again folks. I'm not stopping long tonight but I just HAD to post this link to a documentary that I watched earlier, it's not the best quality but it can be streamed direct from google video so I urge you to watch it.

Yet again we see the untroubled Shane MacGowan apparently on his road of self-destruction that he apparently seems not to notice.
The guy is incredible to me.
A genius.
I wonder how he manages to come up with such poetry like he does when his brain is in a state of constant pickledom.
It's always something that makes me a bit sad..when I see him and listen to him in interviews like on this film, I find myself wondering what he 'could have' been like or what he might have been had he not systematically destroyed every sober moment with whatever drugs he used to take and, now, his full on trip into alcoholism at full throttle. He drinks like one of those old men you see in the tube and yet he's still there ... doing what he does, drinking, smoking and writing songs.
The ironic thing is that he often will say how happy or satisfied he feels and gets pissed off with people worrying about him. Yet he truly is in a semi-comatose reality most of or all of the time.
In this film he even makes some comment about how when it comes to drinking and health, he would always put his health first'!
What is it they say about denial and alcoholics. Yet there is a bit of him that tells you, blatantly to your face: I'm no alcoholic fuck up. this is me, this is how I am and this is my life.
To be honest there's no argument against that.
Please watch it even if you hate the band, you might just see a glimpse of humanity that you never knew existed.

Bob Dylan The Improved Genuine Telecasts 1963-2002 DVD 2 {DVD RiP} XviD

Hello? Is this for real?
He-llo-o-o?
Yes you read that title right. Somewhere, in the darkness of the depths of the candyfloss of the forgotten realms of time and space that is my mind, an unknown and somewhat erratic force has spewn forth the next DVD in the set of the Genuine Improved Telecasts Bootlegs that I kind of promised you a while back.
That day has come my friends so, for those of you brave enough to still be here, your reward is now.

As before, I have taken the original DVD and re-encoded it to XviD so I can upload a bit of a smaller, AVI file. This time I made two avi files of about 700MB each, to keep good quality and audio quality too. (The first disc is encoded to only one single 70MB avi file). Maybe I will redo that one.
The result, as always is with my 'film stuff' on the PC, is great (I can't be humble as I am always trying to perfect my video encoding/editing abilities and I really am pretty damn good at it hehe).

For some information on this you can visit this page but you won't find out anything more than what I am about to tell you..that is, the tracks on the film and the order they come in as well as where they are originally from.

Firstly, let me give you some details about film bitrate etc...

--- File Information ---

File ONE: 001_Dylan Telecasts Disc Two.avi
Running Time (hh:mm:ss): 58:30.542
File Size (in bytes): 732,813,312

--- Video Information ---
Video Codec: XviD ISO MPEG-4
Video Bitrate (kbps): 1402

Audio Codec: 0x0055 MPEG-1 Layer 3
Audio Bitrate(kbps): 256
Audio Sample Rate (Hz): 48000

{ VIDEO ! } Steve Hillage - University Of Kent [Canterbury 1979] XviD

Hey fans. How goes your life.
Mine is trundling along as usual but nothing around here is 'as usual' at the moment.
I decided to put myself on an 'exclusion diet' about 8 days ago. this was my attempt to gain control of my illness and try to make myself get better too. Well, I have definitely been feeling better today!
It is a long LONG time since I was able to say or write that sentence and it feels good :)
There's a long way to go yet but for now, the diet is helping.
And on with todays offering...

Steve Hillage!
The man who can almost bring a tear to my eye when he lets his soul out and spreads hiw unique form of mastery over the guitar!
the man who is NOT included in 'Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists' list.
Tossers obviously don't know much about much! I mean - Kurt Cobain is in the friggin' list!?
Hillage is overlooked and underrated and I'm not really sure why.
It could be his look.
(hehe)
It could be his long-term affiliation to all things 'drug' and 'new-age'. And that's new age in the 'leylines, pixies and standing stones and energy from pyramids' sense of the word, not meditation CD specials that you pick up from a bargain bin.
There must be some reason he isn't more well known or talked about, even in circles such as the 100 greatest guitarists of all time list by Rolling Stone magazine. Funny that.
Well I hereby award STEVE HILLAGE the MP3@3pm award for the second best guitarist ever.
I am sure he will be delighted when he finds out.
(I won't tell him as he may get pissed about me posting his stuff)
Well folks on with the show...
I know a few of you liked what you heard with the previous hillage posting, coincidentaly, the audio version of this very show!
It may not then surprise you to learn that this is the video of said show and it's even better to see what you are hearing, if you know what I mean.
The tracklist is slightly different for this..do not ask me why or how but it seems to be..

As usual recently I have only uploaded to one filehost: Megaupload.com.
Now, if you cannot download from there for some reason then do these two things please: Leave a comment and tell me what the problem is with megaupload that stops you having your downloads. (Is it telling you your country hasd no slots allocated to it or is it telling you to buy a premium account or.. something else?)
Let me know ok!

Some file details and then the links.
I really really want you all to enjoy this as much as I have and I assure you the quality is as good as the DVD I ripped it from, which was a custom-made DVD taken from a Japanese TV broadcast of what was first Filmed and broadcast by the BBC with a show called "Rock Goes to College". I couldn't find the BBC version but I hear it has a time code running across the screen. Well, in a couple of speech parts(very few!) there is Japanese subtitling at the bottom.
It makes no difference believe me though, of course it is always nice to get a pure 'clean' copy.

Bob Dylan Theme Time Radio Hour S03E06 'WAR' [HIGH QUALITY MP3]

Once again a week seems to have flown by so fast I am considering wether my timezone has somehow been compressed or otherwise distorted. Hmm. I will have to investigate though it's not that likely.
More likely is that I just haven't been too 'on the ball' this week.
I know, what a surprise! but hey! I still bring you the show right?
that's all that matters.

Theme Time Radio Hour Show number 306 and the theme is War.
wow.
A theme that could be chosen for absolutely any time on the planet and still be very relative to current goings on.
It's a sad fact but true nevertheless eh.
I fully expected a Bob Marley tune to be in there somewhere and, this time I wasn't disappointed (unlike the Pink Floyd - Money' prediction!). I really got into this weeks show, there are some great tracks on it and I'm sure you'll think so too..

Also this is an extended 90 minute show so we get a bit of a bonus.

So here's your info for this week:

Tracklist
First Half

02 Fightin' In The War With Spain - Wilmer Watts And The Lonely Eagles
03 Searching For A Soldier's Grave - The Bailes Brothers

05 And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda - Eric Bogle
06 The Battle Of New Orleans - Johnny Horton
07 Was My Brother In The Battle? - Kate & Anna McGarrigle
08 Drive Soldiers Drive - Little Maxie Bailey
09 This Cold War With You - Floyd Tillman
10 Universal Soldier - Buffy Sainte-Marie
11 I Believe I'm Gonna Make It - Joe Tex

Duration : 59:00
Total Size : 110.0 MB

Steve Hillage - University Of Kent 1979 [Bootleg]

Shit!
Pirates on the open seas in 2008!
Sorry but am I the only person in the world who is slightly surprised that a ship carrying $100 million worth of oil (or anything for that matter) doesn't have any kind of arms on-board?
I mean, maybe one guy with an old Glock pistol? Even a friggin' Musket or some amateur archery wizard would be better than erm, oh, just the people required to make the ship move.
I say this because they were in the area that they know to be full of these pirates and they know these pirates have already got so many ships and hold so many civilians as hostages.
Ie. they were putting the crew at risk bigtime.
So um, did no-one think of getting some kind of friggin' security on their ship?
Un-fuckin-believable!

Moving on.
Well at least we are not the only pirates then.
There are few guitarists that merit the amount of awe I have for this next guy.
There is, of course, Jimi Hendrix which goes without saying really. To tell the truth I don't have many in my list at all. I know loads of guitar players for sure but, those with some kind of 'gift' that makes me unable to react as I am overwhelmed by the amazement their playing gives, are not so many.
Not for me at least though I would welcome any you would like to recommend?
(David Gilmour is one too).
Steve Hillage isn't as well known as the two names I just mentioned and yet, he is one of the most capable and very original and inventive players you will ever hear. He literally feels the guitar. He doesn't just play it, he becomes it!
Hehe. I know it sounds a bit hippie but that's tough shit.
It was during my 'hippie phase' that I got so into listening to him but it's carried on and stayed with me for life because his talent is a lot more and goes so much deeper than just the 'something that sounds cool when you're off your head' music. (Although it does!)
He has that spark of something that can't be explained very well...he has the ability to control you with his music. I don't mean he makes you go out and revolt against the government(!), he is the best I know at stroking the audience gently...inviting you in slowly with a hypnotic, uncomplicated riff and building on it, bit by bit, transforming it into a journey where you feel you could be soaring above the skies, out into space even, twisting and turning, through different dimensions and warped time...then he will hit you with a solo so strange and fast that your comfort zone, the one he helped you create, is suddenly shattered and you find yourself spinning wildly.
Have no fear of course, for he will lead you back into the hypnotic and meditative where he will eventually set you down slowly so that you can 'land' back where you started, feeling enlightened and refreshed!
Wow. I tried to describe what it's like listening to his music and I think I kind of covered it there :)

This is a live show - and that is another thing about him...playing live, he is just incredible. Doesn't miss a note.
A few wee details for you including the Tracks played.

Electric Gypsies
Salmon Song
New Age Synthesis (Unzipping The Zype)
1988 Aktivator
Unidentified (Flying Being)
It's All To Much
Crystal City (don't think this is in this set)
Om Riff

Duration : 52:50

Total Size : 60.5 MB

This file is an mp2 file (don't worry, most mp3 or media players will play it as if it were MP3. If yours won't, leave a comment and I'll sort you out fast.

A post for guitarists - Or did you ever fancy your hand at trying to learn?

Due to the absolutely overwhelming amount of feedback here I have been unable to post as I am literally snowed under with having to go through comment after comment after comment..etc,..
It's good though because I am now aware of just how much you appreciate Tom Waits and his older, less heard, bootleg stuff.
Therefore I will be bringing you PLENTY MORE so thanks again for the feedback.
OK. I know I'm not funny but one tries.
Fuckin sarcasm.
...great isn't it.?

A little bird told me the other day that, the lovely (understatement of the decade!!!), hand crafted, black with an orange (wood) trim that looks just ... erm, oh yes, the lovely GUITAR that I regularly drool over in the local music shop (like some nerdy teenager - I know hehe) is actually going to be MINE.
Mine, all mine har-har-har-haaaar.
I can hardly believe it but it's true indeed.
My lady, Her Ladyship as I will call her for the purposes of not naming her on this blog, well she let it slip that she has procured this very item for my Christmas!
Now, usually I would be all for comments such as 'Christmas is a load of ol' bollocks these days' and 'fuckin' christmas is just commercial shite' or even 'FUCK CHRISTMAS', but on this occasion I may have a slight change of heart.
I mean, come on!
Christmas isn't that bad!
Don't be a miserable twat.

To celebrate the oncoming guitar-laden virtual heaven on earth situation that awaits, I thought I would share with you some of the ebookery that resides on my ever swollen Hard Drive(s). There are lots of places to purloin ebooks on the net but not everyone is a google master (thank you, thank you) and also, I seem to have collected some ebooks that, when searched for now, are not around or easy to find.
So I bring you...a few guitar Learning books followed by a few guitar Tablature (that's songbooks with the guitar chords etc in them for you beginners!) books too.
I can't give you every one I have but I tried to pick out a range so there will be something in the TAB books for everyone I hope.
No actual music today but tonight is Dylan Radio Night so I'm already busy soon!

Now, there are a few of these I uploaded to megaupload earlier so I have decided to make one of those megaupload folders which, if you care, just means that I only have to post one single link and you will see all of the books when you follow it, then choose what you want from there!
Great eh?!
Well it is for me. :)

Tom Waits - The Dime Store Novels Vol.1 (Live at Ebbetts Field) [10-04-1974]

Hello again you lot.
Firework night. What a noisy irritation that is. I wouldn't mind if it really was just 'Firework Night' but it's firework week and beyond...'. again I look at what I'm writing and think 'shit, am I that old and grumpy?' hehe.
Obviously.
Those friggin' young 'uns need to shut that feckin' noise up cos' it makes me almost jump out of me slippers and spill me nice cuppa tea all over me dressing gown damnit!
In my day you were glad if you got to hold a bloody sparkler whilst watching the local display. Nowadays..oh bollocks.
There is a new president in USA, did you hear about it yet?

US Elections?
Sick of hearing about it, me.
It's great and all, oh yes I really do think so.
Brilliant news.
It just makes me wonder - when did we become such a full-on media driven society with screens everywhere that bring us news story after news story - to the point where every piece of news is kind of devalued and becomes part of the general background noise??!!
It pisses me off.
How many different people can the BBC or(insert any News station here) find to interview and ask 'How does it make you feel having a black president' or 'Do you think Obama will make the changes he has promised' or 'bla bla bla'.
All interesting stuff but not a million times over.
I hate the media and yet it's a major part of my life.
Damn.

OK so it's Tom Waits today and you better be ready cos' this one will rock your underpants down if you see what I mean.

I have another version of this show named 'Denver 1974' but it would seem that there is a person known as Wolf who is in the habit of producing remasters of bootlegs. From what I have heard he knows what he's doing too.
So this also goes by the name of Wolf Remastered volume 4.
Whatever, I'm sure you don't give a shit anyway.

Oh yeah and I stupidly called last weeks show season 3 episode 4 but really it should just be marked down as a 'no show' and a repeat as that is what it was.
(Just to explain why this week and last have the same show numbers in the post header!)

Lou Reed

Pssssstt!
I hear Lou Reed has a new album out. Not that I would be posting any new albums here of course so I will just say that I was listening to it today and, erm, there's a lot to like and quite a bit not to like too.

Hehe.
What a review eh?
Seriously though I always find this with his albums.
He will produce some of the best good old fashioned Rock you could ever hear and also some beautiful ballads.
Then you get into some kind of comfort zone until suddenly you hear some shit streaming from the speakers that can make you want to turn off so quickly it almost has the power to turn you off of Lou Reed altogether.
Well thankfully, not quite.
I doubt I could ever be turned off of him as he is a huge talent.
Every album, I find a song that will really grab me and this one has it too.
I love the track Men of Good Fortune. It has all the elements of a Lou Reed goal if ever there was such a thing. The vocal just sitting there above the bass and guitar lines...his voice is so distinctive and the words so clear.
What can I say..it's a great song.
Like on other stuff of his he talks a lot about people and situations on this album.
Stories and society stuff.
always womens names too for some reason.
(Maybe he knows a lot of women?)
Whatever, he hasn't deviated much from his 'norm' with this and I am glad.
All good.
Well, except for the annoying tracks.
I will leave it up to you to decide which ones those are but the next great track to me is entitled How do you think it feels with the unique line 'how do you think it feels to always make love by proxy'.
Heh.
Quite.
Check the links out anyway whilst you're here eh.

Tom Waits - KPFK Folk Scene [8-12-73]

Tom Waits.
It is time for some journeying into the area of Tom Waits. Not the usual studio album journeys, that road is well travelled so I'd like to bring you some rarer bootlegs. Some rare, some not but all worthy.
Tom Waits..Tom Waits..
What a cool guy he be.
I mean is there anyone as cool as he?
I doubt it.
OK maybe, not unlike a certain Mr Dylan, the eighties brought with them a state of confusion for the guy and he did some things and released some albums that he maybe wouldn't have, had he not been swept away in the fun of the decade(!)

Was anyone cool in the eighties though?
I suppose there were a few now that I think about it. It seems to be only the folk that actually appeared and started to come on the music scene during the eighties, that were actually able to be 'cool' in the eighties. For the other poor sods that already had a good music career..so many of them underwent a bit of a crisis of culture and identity which resulted in some very dodgy fashion decisions, ropey dancing and a fair few randomly awful haircuts and, worst of all, albums and songs of dubious quality.
Anyway this album is from the Seventies so you might well wonder what the hell I am going on about.
Me too.
Coolness, that's all.
So Tom Waits. The KING of cool.
Let's start this foray into his music by first visiting this bootleg here which goes by the name of: KPFK Folk Scene which tells you that it's a recording from the radio show called Folk Scene which aired on KPFK FM Radio, Los Angeles on August 12th 1973.
One year before I was born no less.
Hmm.
This is quite a stunning collection and is also interesting by the fact that it has a song alternated by an interview section all the way through. So you get a track sung live and then Tom talks about the track to the interviewer. Great!
A few good nuggets of info to learn about the songs you know(and don't).
I was unaware of the existence of this until this week.
Glad I found it.
The performance is stunning and the audio quality nice, obviously the FM recording.
Enjoy...

The Doors (Riders On The Storm) - Keswick Theater 2007 {BOOTLEG}

The Doors

Hello Spooks. Did you go out trick or treating then? I doubt it but maybe there are some of you out there just mad enough to do it. Myself, I just sat on my arse, well no, I tell a lie, I sort of lay across the sofa watching some piss poor ITV mystery drama. Wasn't my fault, as some of you might relate: When her Ladyship(!) wants to watch something and, when that something just happens to be part two in a two part drama then there is no chance of upsetting the equilibrium by attempting to change the order of proceedings right?
Or in other words, it's best to just leave it and so I watched the crap too.
OK OK, I enjoyed it even. Pity I missed the first part though!

So Halloween is here and gone...the ghostly spooks and all that shit.
Hmm. Whatever.
I downloaded this the other day and I really do love it.
I thought no one EVER could sing The Doors. I don't mean no one could replace Jim Morrison because that goes without saying - noone could...ever! Be that for the fact that he was a mental bastard and drunken arse or the fact that he was a deeply poetic and visionary soul who never quite satisfied his thirst for learning of the 'darker side' of life and consciousness, death and ecstasy...though his fascination with death may have been what ultimately led him to it so soon. Who knows.
He really was an interesting man.
So! I would never expect any new front man of The Doors to be trying to replace him but I have also been of the mind that no one could really sing those songs and do them justice.
How wrong was I!
This guy..Brett Scallions.. he ferkin' rocks that stage so well.
I am almost scared to admit - to myself even- that I actually PREFERRED some of his versions of good The Doors tracks!
Heinous criminal I be!
Shit folks it is so late and I lack sleep. what I am saying is...goodnight.

Enjoy this because its great audio quality and a feckin' blast of a concert. One I would have loved to be at.
G'night then..

It'll soon be the fifth of November... Fireworks night here in England.
I suppose it isn't celebrated anywhere else, being that it is based around some criminal act of treason against the British Monarchy and the ole Houses of Parliament!
Or did the American settlers actually take the tradition across with them? Hmm
I can't be bothered looking it up right now.
I wonder...
