Steve Hillage - University Of Kent 1979 [Bootleg]

Shit!
Pirates on the open seas in 2008!
Sorry but am I the only person in the world who is slightly surprised that a ship carrying $100 million worth of oil (or anything for that matter) doesn't have any kind of arms on-board?
I mean, maybe one guy with an old Glock pistol? Even a friggin' Musket or some amateur archery wizard would be better than erm, oh, just the people required to make the ship move.
I say this because they were in the area that they know to be full of these pirates and they know these pirates have already got so many ships and hold so many civilians as hostages.
Ie. they were putting the crew at risk bigtime.
So um, did no-one think of getting some kind of friggin' security on their ship?
Un-fuckin-believable!

Moving on.
Well at least we are not the only pirates then.
There are few guitarists that merit the amount of awe I have for this next guy.
There is, of course, Jimi Hendrix which goes without saying really. To tell the truth I don't have many in my list at all. I know loads of guitar players for sure but, those with some kind of 'gift' that makes me unable to react as I am overwhelmed by the amazement their playing gives, are not so many.
Not for me at least though I would welcome any you would like to recommend?
(David Gilmour is one too).
Steve Hillage isn't as well known as the two names I just mentioned and yet, he is one of the most capable and very original and inventive players you will ever hear. He literally feels the guitar. He doesn't just play it, he becomes it!
Hehe. I know it sounds a bit hippie but that's tough shit.
It was during my 'hippie phase' that I got so into listening to him but it's carried on and stayed with me for life because his talent is a lot more and goes so much deeper than just the 'something that sounds cool when you're off your head' music. (Although it does!)
He has that spark of something that can't be explained very well...he has the ability to control you with his music. I don't mean he makes you go out and revolt against the government(!), he is the best I know at stroking the audience gently...inviting you in slowly with a hypnotic, uncomplicated riff and building on it, bit by bit, transforming it into a journey where you feel you could be soaring above the skies, out into space even, twisting and turning, through different dimensions and warped time...then he will hit you with a solo so strange and fast that your comfort zone, the one he helped you create, is suddenly shattered and you find yourself spinning wildly.
Have no fear of course, for he will lead you back into the hypnotic and meditative where he will eventually set you down slowly so that you can 'land' back where you started, feeling enlightened and refreshed!
Wow. I tried to describe what it's like listening to his music and I think I kind of covered it there :)

This is a live show - and that is another thing about him...playing live, he is just incredible. Doesn't miss a note.
A few wee details for you including the Tracks played.

Electric Gypsies
Salmon Song
New Age Synthesis (Unzipping The Zype)
1988 Aktivator
Unidentified (Flying Being)
It's All To Much
Crystal City (don't think this is in this set)
Om Riff

I'm loving this. Clear as a bell recording - which reminded me just how awesome they were live back in the late 70's. For a 'hippy band' they were (technical term coming up here) tight as fuck, not-getting-sacked-from-Zappa's-band tight. And I'd forgotten how funky they were, too. Space funk. And space punk, too.

Anyhow, since all of Steve's 70's albums are easy enough to come by on t'internet, I thought you might appreciate something a bit more exclusive. Here's what the presumably well-gnarled Stevieboy is up to these days:

Evan Marc & Steve Hillage
Dreamtime Submersible

Diving deep with hypnotic rhythms, sub-aquatic bass pulsations and reverberant melodies Evan Marc explores varying states of non-waking life on this full-length outing. His sensitive approach to sound design is woven perfectly with atmospheric guitar tones supplied by System 7's Steve Hillage, crafting a unique and cinematic take on the dub techno paradigm. Adding an organic and otherworldly current to the journey with his signature underwater guitar tones, Steve's contribution helps to create an ambient techno submersible for deep dreaming. Continuously mixed, this album is limited to 777 copies, printed with soy inks on recycled paper, sewn closed, sealed in wax, and signed and numbered.

Get it now for free and feel like a cheapskate at:

Buy it now and occupy the moral high ground at:

There's a few clicks on the RS download - sounds like i ripped it from vinyl (which i didn't). Its a world away from 70's Hillage but is going to be your headphone fave once you get hold of it.

All the best
