Howling Diablos - Green Bottle [1998]

Hello people.
Been watching tennis? I know so many people think it's boring but I love a bit of Wimbledon I have to say.
Federer is at the moment beating some guy who's name I can't spell and making it look easy...
In other news Micheal Jackson died. Yes I saw the story unfold as it happened, from the reports of it from TMZ and then to other sites as it came out.
It's weird. Do people care? Really? Everyone thinks of him as a weirdo paedophile as far as I can tell and that's probably right but, this being a music blog I can't let it pass without saying something about it.
Not exactly one of my favourite musicians he was bloody good at what he did.
The king of pop? Probably. Just good. Great even.
That's all I need to say.
The guy was sad and weird and a good musician and showman.
I'm not going to talk about any of his 'legal issues'...
He died. RIP and all that.

OK! ... Today is a great day!!!
I discovered a band yesterday and have been listening to this album so much I really know it well already...
Don't you love that when you can get into some tunes soo much that you quickly know half the lyrics and all the subtle changes in the music etc..well that is how this has got me today.
Not only is it a new band, I'm shamed to say it's (almost) a new genre for me too.
The Howling Diablos.
They are, simply put, a funk-rock band.
They play heavy and really funky rock music and they play it well.
I knew it was a bit new to my ears when I realised I couldn't really compare them to any other artist I could think of ... apart from maybe the Red Hot Chilli Peppers but then I have never given them a chance at all any way. I just never liked them. Not sure why. Some music clicks with me, some doesn't.
It's that simple.
Well the Howling Diablos have clicked.

Celebrate Micah P Hinson!

Yeurgh.
I am a firm believer in the TRUTH.
At all times, surely.
So it is perhaps that that leads me to always tell you when I am so ill and attempt to explain the absence. I mean, I could just come on and post some crap link to another music site or, worse, I could come and upload anything, write a load about it when I am just not able to get into even having a refresher listen to the album. I don't like to do that.
Every album I share with you I listen to thoroughly!
Either it is something that I already know so well that I can give you my take on it, or it is something new to me and so I want you to share in the experience it has given me.
Both of those requires that I am actually listening to the music and then writing something here!
Well this Crohn's Disease can get so bad that those options become so difficult to achieve some days!
The past few weeks has seen a serious downward trend in my health/abilities. The illness affects me that way; Slowly, slowly, over months or years the symptoms get worse..more nausea, more pain, more weakness and fatigue.
The weakness and pain are running the whole show right now so it makes it hard to do much. I am on strong painkillers and that is just another thing to contend with as they mess with your personality. Well, they mess with your mood, I should say. concentration becomes a problem.
So there it is again.
Crohn's Disease taking over more of a post than the music info!

I was glad to receive a few emails on the subject of my previous post of this guy. People do like him!
I still think he is a special voice in our times that needs to be heard. Just for those moments of quiet you can get for yourself. To be in a peaceful surrounding and listen to this guy is an enlightening experience.

Micah P Hinson & The Gospel of Progress.. [2004]

Hello to you all. Today is a strange one. For sure.
I was reading some absolute HORSE-SHIT earlier, talking about the Hudson River Plane in the Bird-strike-Fall-from-the-sky escapades and would you believe it, some people, fucking moronic Twats in my opinion, actually have been carving out stories and supposed versions of the 'truth' as they see it. What I mean is, they want to find out 'the real truth' that the official 'cover up' story is hiding from us.
apparently it is a conspiracy and it seems there are two possible main objectives to it being a fabricated lie and the plane actually being brought down on purpose as part of a planned conspiracy:
It was simply to act as a sudden diversion for the public. To be picked up by the media, thus getting the Gaza etc situation out of the news and giving people a nice 'Hero' story to think and talk about so they are all happy for the Inauguration day!
Wow. I thought that one was far fetched and pointless too but hang on...
They were saying that a number of bankers were on the plane. Coincidence?
Apparently not. (Although it is also known that this would not be unusual for a plane covering that journey as it is where bankers travel to and from regularly - the conspiracy nuts declined to mention or talk of that fact!).
they conclude that either the plane was supposed to come down more spectacularly and the bankers die, therefore causing a huge crisis in the financial markets..I fail to see how that would have such a devastating effect but anyway, or they think maybe the whole thing was executed exactly as planned: Someone was trying to, and succeeded in getting the message to these bankers, that they were being warned or scared off about something.
Now you might think well..that is fucking crazy. And you'd be right however they go further.
They even discuss things like 'where is the missing engine' or 'no way a bird strike can do that' and all the usual nonsense just like the 9/11 stuff you still can read today.
These Twats must have even less to fill their days than I do, and I find that a bit hard to believe, but they sure can write a whole load of shit!
(Hmm..something else they share with me too eh...?

Never heard of him?
Me neither til a nice kind one of you lot sent me a track in an email and asked if I had a certain album.
What can I say except I love it.
You know how some people just have that certain something that makes you stop what you're doing when you hear them sing.
Tom Waits used to do it to me. Still can but I am so familiar with him now I am usually singing along! The same goes for Dylan and, his early stuff, if I hear something I haven't yet heard, can still do that to me.
There are loads of characters that have this gift, if you want to call it that.
Leonard Cohen is the master of this kind of thing.
He brings a feeling, an atmosphere and even when he can be singing about the most depressing, tragic, sorrowful story in the lyrics, you still have a warm feeling in yer belly when you sit and listen to the perfectly poetic voice.
I would say that is a good evaluation of Micah P Hinson.
(Wish he had a different name though..does my head in saying that mouthful. I mean, can't the twat just call himself whatever the friggin' P stands for? Or Micah would be better than all that.
Sorry I obviously need anger management.
So here, for you, for one day only, excluding the following day and that next one beyond, is an album of his that is particularly good and a great intro to the perfection of his style...drink it in chaps and chaplets.

Jim White - Wrong Eyed Jesus (1997)

Hello again so soon!

I did say I had a great album for you and this is the truth!
In fact, what better Christmas gift to you could I leave!!
I am leaving for the train station in about ten minutes so, forgive me for not writing much here!!


There is a documentary/film with the same name, or more accurately 'Searching for the Wrong-eyed Jesus' which is a BBC thing and sounds really interesting. so I am going to get that also and maybe share the film here too if you want?

I got the music a while back and I just love the guys voice. The lyrics are poetry in motion too.
This guy is one of those rare finds. Like the Bob dylans and the Tom Waits before him. He has that special something.

Tom Waits - San Diego Folk Festival [4-19-74]

Hello again. I think, whilst I await my encoding of theme Time for this week, I will treat you to the next in the series of posts of Tom Waits Bootlegs.

This one is, as I will describe probably all of them to you, a great listen.
Way back when the earth was young and Tom Waits didn't look like a grandpa (hehe) he had a really definitive voice.
Much more, in my opinion, than he does today.
Most artists I find kind of grow into their voice and as they age it gets to sound even better but I think Waits is the exception here. I don't mean that to sound like I think he has a shit voice these days - I don't.
I just think that back in the day, the day that this show is from, he had something close to god-like when he sang certain songs and hit certain raspy noted with that gravelly growl of a voice.
You may or may not agree.
How will I ever know you never leave a friggin' comment.
Heh.

I'm no bootlegs expert-nerd that knows everything.

It just makes me wonder - when did we become such a full-on media driven society with screens everywhere that bring us news story after news story - to the point where every piece of news is kind of devalued and becomes part of the general background noise??!!
It pisses me off.
How many different people can the BBC or(insert any News station here) find to interview and ask 'How does it make you feel having a black president' or 'Do you think Obama will make the changes he has promised' or 'bla bla bla'.
All interesting stuff but not a million times over.
I hate the media and yet it's a major part of my life.
Damn.

I have another version of this show named 'Denver 1974' but it would seem that there is a person known as Wolf who is in the habit of producing remasters of bootlegs. From what I have heard he knows what he's doing too.
So this also goes by the name of Wolf Remastered volume 4.
Whatever, I'm sure you don't give a shit anyway.

Tom Waits - KPFK Folk Scene [8-12-73]

Tom Waits.
It is time for some journeying into the area of Tom Waits. Not the usual studio album journeys, that road is well travelled so I'd like to bring you some rarer bootlegs. Some rare, some not but all worthy.
Tom Waits..Tom Waits..
What a cool guy he be.
I mean is there anyone as cool as he?
I doubt it.
OK maybe, not unlike a certain Mr Dylan, the eighties brought with them a state of confusion for the guy and he did some things and released some albums that he maybe wouldn't have, had he not been swept away in the fun of the decade(!)

Was anyone cool in the eighties though?
I suppose there were a few now that I think about it. It seems to be only the folk that actually appeared and started to come on the music scene during the eighties, that were actually able to be 'cool' in the eighties. For the other poor sods that already had a good music career..so many of them underwent a bit of a crisis of culture and identity which resulted in some very dodgy fashion decisions, ropey dancing and a fair few randomly awful haircuts and, worst of all, albums and songs of dubious quality.
Anyway this album is from the Seventies so you might well wonder what the hell I am going on about.
Me too.
Coolness, that's all.
So Tom Waits. The KING of cool.
Let's start this foray into his music by first visiting this bootleg here which goes by the name of: KPFK Folk Scene which tells you that it's a recording from the radio show called Folk Scene which aired on KPFK FM Radio, Los Angeles on August 12th 1973.
One year before I was born no less.
Hmm.
This is quite a stunning collection and is also interesting by the fact that it has a song alternated by an interview section all the way through. So you get a track sung live and then Tom talks about the track to the interviewer. Great!
A few good nuggets of info to learn about the songs you know(and don't).
I was unaware of the existence of this until this week.
Glad I found it.
The performance is stunning and the audio quality nice, obviously the FM recording.

[2005] Shivaree - Who's Got Trouble?

Wow.
I am so glad someone requested this album for I hadn't heard of this singer until then. I do remember her sound -and you might- from the Kill Bill SoundTrack.
You might not though.
You will however recognise that (well suited to Kill Bill) American-Bar-room-late-at-night' sound.
Sophisticated but not pretentious. Stylish and smooth.
Intimate; Her voice is piercing, yet not sharp(!)... reminds me of Tom Waits in places, not only due to the walking Basslines and obvious Blues roots.
This is a stunning album from a high class artist. Nothing more to say.
Don't miss out.
Her real name is Ambrosia Parsley. Heh.
