Pssst. Heard this yet? CD of the Week (according to The Guardian)

Hello fans
Sometimes I hear something on the radio (I recommend BBC Radio 6 Music, weekends for some 'eclectic' choices) and it's new, fresh, different and well...I want to share that knowledge around here so that's what this post is about.
Unfortunately some bands don't seem to like the free distribution of their music (can't think why..OK that was uncalled for) and so, when you search for some bands you find a million deleted rapidshare or megaupload links and numerous copyrighted material warnings and dead links. This indicates a couple of things to me usually: the album is popular; the artist doesn't want it to be popular as in 'free'. (Quite right, I agree).
So to cover my own balls I am not going to be so stupid as to upload this bands album today.
No Sir-ee Bob (as Richard Pryor would say), I am more cleverer than I presume to look.
Instead I will do two things: I will firstly tell you all what a great and exciting band I really do think these people are. I think they might never be HUGE but that says more about the moronic music industry and the media than it tells us about bands like this. It seems they have lasted and I think they will go on to do so... and, I know I WILL actually...yes I am going to say it..BUY their music.
by the way, it sounds like I am saying this is a new band. this is actually their fourth album. They are just new to me but I am always a bit slow.
The second thing I am going to do is to give you some links here which I found on some other sites, therefore I had nothing to do with it.
Anyway if you like it then go and buy the damn album if it makes you happy - make someone else happy.
(Isn't that how life is supposed to work?)

I have been furtively (!!) uploading in preparation for todays grand update. Well OK, it isn't that 'grand' but let's face it: and more than two albums a week around here is pretty grand isn't it?
(Oh by the way, feel free to help pout by uploading your favourite albums to rapidshare or somewhere and sending the links to me!)
Let me kick off this belated weekend post with a band who are, surprise surprise, NEW to me, maybe even new to you? either way I find them hard to describe with much of a degree of accuracy for some reason...When I suggested they reminded me of 'a typical yet not too typical 80's sounding band'(and I don't mean like all the other shit you hear nowadays a-la kaiser chiefs etc etc), anyway yes, where was I.
Oh yes, when I suggested to my dear woman that they sounded like something that was verging on 'Depeche Mode-meets erm,-something-else-that-isn't-quite-as-crap' She told me to shut up talking shit.
You probably will too.
Obviously none of you were privy to the EXCLUSIVE Depeche Mode material that I had back in the day.
Either that or I'm just talking crap.

Björk.
She screams, she shouts, she wails like some creature, undead; a banshee of the night, she squaaaks and squeaks and dances around like a demented chicken.
What exactly is it about Björk?
What is it about this tiny little elvin, pixie-ish, teency-weency gnomey yet doll-like figurine sized extra from one of those christmas time disney films??
Beats me.
I do like her new album though.

[2007] Travis - The Boy with No Name ~Promo~

I used to think Travis were pretty good. I kind of went off them a bit after the last album though. They had that ability to sound as if they were always fucking moaning or complaining like some whinging self pitying twat!
Well this highly anticipated(by me at least) album is no different!
Some good tracks for sure but I couldn't get away from the impression that ALL Travis songs not only sound like a complaint put to music, they also don't ever grab you; no passion.
The only word that sums up all of their songs, very very well I might add is..
Meandering.
They don't flow.
They meander.
Can't stand fucking meanderers!
Don't listen to me though right?

We Are Scientists - With Love And Squalor

I haven't posted in a while, but now I am, I've got an album I promised many moons ago, We Are Scientist's With Love and Squalor. Pretty much, if you like all the other indie rock out there, Kaiser Chiefs, Blur, Art Brut, you'll like this.
I would also like to take this opportunity to announce/shamelessly plug my new mp3 blog, Free Indie Tunes - John Peel for the 20th Century, a blog I've been using to post singles and EPs from lesser known bands who may only have a few songs, alongside the occasional mainstream artst. 10,000 Maniacs - In My Tribe [1987]

After I posted Howling Bells me ol' mate HitMeWithThis said it reminded him of the female vocalist from 10,000 Maniacs.
I had never heard of them. As usual.
This was just the first album I found.
I have since been listening and, whilst I am not truly amazed by it, the album is pleasant enough(!)

I'm not just an average misogynist ... what I mean is I am not one AT ALL (to make that point clear), yet, female singers ... well, I just haven't heard many I like. I mentioned this before here when I discovered the brilliant reggae singer Dezarie who had me blown away!

So I have a similar reaction with this vocalist. Natalie Merchant her name is. (I even went and got an album of hers, solo. May post it or may delete it: if you are interested in hearing it then tell me so!)
She can sing, definitely. She just doesn't do anything for me.
Doesn't even leave me cold.
Nothing.
It just goes over my head for some reason. Maybe my head is unnaturally small?
It could be that I just don't like this kind of music..hmm probably.
Yet they are damn popular so I must be missing something right?
Wrong.
Taste is subjective.
I don't like 10,000 Maniacs.
You might well love 'em!

Nine Inch Nails - Survivalism

Well, I'm still uploading WAS and Art Brut, but here's the new Nine Inch Nails single, Survivalism, from their album Year Zero, due to come out April 17th. I don't know if this's been released truly yet, but I ripped it from Kroq. It's great, download it now, pre-order the album, I'll post it when it comes out!

Various Artists - No New York

FIrst off, I have to say that this isn't my link, it was emailed to me by a friend.
This is a compilation called No New York, compiledand produced by Brian Eno, this is sixteen tracks by the four essenitial No Wave bands of the 80's. Yes, No Wave, not New Wave. Basically, it's noise/industrial/post-punk/avant-garde awesomeness and I highly recommend you download this. Next post I make will be art brut and we are scientists debut albums. I promise.

Howling Bells - Howling Bells [2006]

I somehow came across this band the other day completely by accident. What I mean by that is that I wasn't looking for any music at that time, I was just aimlessly surfing the net trying to focus my mind from pain etc. I found a page where someone had uploaded a couple of tracks and was going on about how great this band was. I couldn't read that and then just go off without trying them for myself now could I?
Am I glad I did!
I now have them in my playlist on Winamp more than anything else (for now).
I love it!
Think 'Nick cave' meets 'PJ Harvey' meets Transvision Vamp (yes seriously) meets Siouxsie Sioux(get this - I have just been informed that they used to be a couple and I knew nothing of it!!)... meets that 90's UK Grunge sound.
Interesting mix?
I can't tell you enough times YOU MUST hear this.

Unfortunately I discover today that the so far brilliant and fast, unlimited file hosting service MEDIAFIRE.com, has now announced it will no longer be accepting password protected rar files.
Fair enough, bad news and all that but the most annoying thing is that they didn't actually fuckin' announce it; I uploaded a huge file there and when it had finally finished uploading the page refreshed with the message informing me of the new rule and saying the file would not be hosted there.
Might they consider just telling us BEFORE we upload something?
Damn.
On a lighter note, I just spent about a whole days worth of hours removing the worst virus I have even encountered. Ever.
It consisted of lots of separate files which all helped each other to stay active and stop me removing or deleting any of them. It is a horrible thing when you delete a file and it reappears right there in front of you.
Even more horrifying is when you try to run any of lots of security programs, even the registry editor and windows throws up an error saying the file cannot be found...when you are looking right at the file and it is definitely there!
I learned a lot today.
I learned about 'Image File Execution Options' which, you would hope you never have to. This part of your loving XP registry is where you can enter a file name and an alias which basically means, if I enter notepad and give it the alias iexplore.exe(the Internet explorer program file) then, any time anyone tries to run notepad internet explorer will open.
now, imagine if you have a huge list of every known antivirus program file written into there with the alias file all being redirected to the actual virus! Causing it to be executed multiple times any time you try to do anything! Then add to that the ability, whenever I open ANY explorer window, for a pair of files to be instantly created which are another part of the virus...I could go on.
One more thing, this seems to be a very new or little known about virus too.
A Google or any other search only brought back pages from China...and not many either.
I like a challenge though.
I won.
Heh.

For any of you not savvy in the area of computing generally: You have NOTHING to fear from any mp3 files or anything I upload!! The virus infects EXE files and DLL files only. Plus, you should scan everything you download anyway, not like me...I learned that much today: To stop being a twat and thinking I had an invincible PC!

Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine

I kind of missed this band first time around.
I If remember rightly I used to say they were 'a bunch of vacuous morons' but ... well, I must have changed. Am I now a vacuous moron? Possibly.
Anyway, maybe it's a reflection of where I am in my life at the moment but I've been listening to them a lot and they rock, with attitude.
I got a few of their albums but the their self-titled is a great one so I bring it to you.
If you were, like me, dismissive of them in their day, I urge you to give them a try now. You might just like them. Their lyrics are surprisingly quite accurate at times! and even more surprisingly a bit more intellectually competent than I ever imagined. Don't get me wrong here I'm not saying they should enter any poetry contests or even apply to MENSA but they do make some cutting remarks in their songs now and then, especially in these war torn times.
Heavy rock and electric guitar sound, Thrash, American punk-rap. (That's for anyone who has never heard of them)
To be played LOUD.

Now I want to just give the link to the album someone requested in the comments of the PJ Harvey my woman posted the other day.
It's called '4-track Demos'. So if you requested it, here it is! Thus proving that I really do listen to what the people say and deliver what they want.
Ahem.

Radiohead - Itch [1994] Japan Import

I've had this album sitting here for a few weeks now and had a listen to it a couple of days ago. Never been a full on fan of Radiohead but I always loved hearing that song 'Fake Plastic Trees' from their album 'The Bends'. It's a great song for sure. The lyrics really cut through you, if you bother to digest them. That album was my introduction to Radiohead way back in 1995 or early '96. I always get a stirring memory when I hear Radiohead and especially that song. Let me tell you why:
I knew a guy called Russell who lived on the Island in Scotland that I had lived on for years..he was locally thought of as a bit weird; scatty; a bit of a druggie. He played guitar and was really quite good too and so, me being a guitarist we ended up knowing each other. Long story short, I discovered exactly why he was so neurotic and supposedly weird, he was dying. He had a terminal condition and was in serious intractable pain 24/7.
Yet he still managed to come round and have a joint and play guitar with us all.
He brings a smile to my face when I think of some of those times we all had. He was a mad fucker but a more genuine guy you couldn't hope to meet.
The Radiohead connection comes in when I went to his house one day and he put 'The Bends' on. I was talking at the time and he just looked over at me and said 'SHUT UP and just LISTEN'. whilst I was in half sentence.
I listened.
To the whole album.

He then went on saying that Radiohead were going to go down in history; a band with a huge & rare talent and, compared to the popuilar bands of the moment which were Oasis, Oasis and er, Oasis(at least where I lived!) he said they blew them out of the water without even trying. Being an Oasis fan -idiot- I would laugh at this but somewhere I knew he was talking sense. I got 'The Bends' and listened to it a lot from then on. We taught each other the tracks off of it and would sing Radiohead when we were drunk enough(!).
I left the Island about a year after that.
I got word Russell died a month or two later.
I bet he would have loved this album.


So how is the music?
In a nutshell this is a collection of EPs that were released onto this album in Japan, just before The Bends was released. Seems it then became quite a golden egg to get a hold of. Not sure if that situation is the same nowadays but either way it's still rated, in my opinion, as one of THE albums to get if you like the band. It sits there alongside 'The Bends' as a work of genius as far as I am concerned. I don't have or listen to much of any other Radiohead music. I don't think any of it compares to this one and The Bends.
If you like 'em, get it!
If you haven't tried 'em - You NEED to get it!
